My dogs hips

Posted by Maxime on January 7, 2011, at 23:37:03

Hi, I am sure I have posted about my beloved dog on here. If I haven't, I would be very surprised. She is a yellow lab. I love her SO MUCH. She is 9 years old now and she still likes to run which is good. But her hips hurt her. When she is the house, she always sleeps under a table with her hip against the radiator.

I am sitting here toasty warm in an electric throw blanket. I started to wonder if I should get one for her too. Do you think it would help, or would it dry out her skin? Or maybe a heating pad?

I hope I don't sound stupid, but I believe that as a dog ages you must provide for them in a different way. She deserves to be comfortable.

i've known people to provide a well wrapped wheat pack for their aged pets. it doesn't sound odd to me at all. maybe look into fish oil? i've personally had good results from it for arthritis / joint inflammation. particularly in the colder weather.

What is a wheat wrap? Is it those things you put in the microwave to heat them up?

Good--I was going to suggest that as I just discovered these online when I was looking for a portable heated blanket.

Also, you may already do this, but glucosamine chondroitin supplements help my dog's hips. You can get the regular unflavored kind very cheap anywhere that sells vitamins and supplements, or the more expensive, but surely tastier, beef liver flavored ones through a vet or pet med supplier.

yes that was what i was thinking. better to get the one made for dogs, though, 'cause it will be more dog proof.
