I feel bad for the UCLA girl

Posted by no rose garden on March 15, 2011, at 21:30:30

I feel bad for the girl from UCLA who posted the "Asians in the library" video on YouTUbe. Yes, what she said was stupid, but she's apologized and i'm sure she's realized she shouldn't say those kinds of things in a worldwide venue.

But there are so many horrible comments directed at her and video responses and just really horrible things said towards her. If i put myself in her shoes, i would probably kill myself. I'd probably have to drop out of school and hide forever. I absolutely don't think she should, but she doesn't need to be treated how she is either. I really hope she's not paying attention to those comments.

This is like the internet bullying that they're always talking about.

I really feel bad for her.

I have a number of opinions and thoughts about the bigger picture of open social media, such as video blogging on YouTube and the like, and it's consequences.... This situation brought those thoughts to the forefront. In many areas, technology has outpaced the ability to know what to do with it, how to deal with it, what to make of it, etc. Appears no one benefited on this one......

There was talk on web md on cyberbullying and how it ca lead to suicide and many bad reactions. It was a warning to parents to monitor the sites their kids and teens visited. I think it ended up on facebook also. Phillipa

This is an ugly, unfortunate and unsettling situation. A bad circumstance that I hope can serve as a learning experience about judgements, fixed beliefs, tolerance, diversity..... handling of problems between humans - that goes for the young woman and those hurt/angered by the contents of young woman's vlog.... I feel for both sides, if we can make it merely two sided, while feeling very uncomfortable about the actions of both sides.

I hold that hope but my realistic meter has me not being Pollyannaesque.

She mentioned tsunami, though I have no way of guessing her knowledge of geography.

Do you think it possible that Japanese students were using mobile phones in a library?

This reminds me of Danni Minogue who complained that when she came back from the UK, 'All the street signs are written in Asian'.

She is an idiot. Not to mention a racist. She even posted it herself so that makes her a double idiot.

She won't think so. No one has as much shame anymore.

We watched "Inside Job" the other day, and the shamelessness was the single strongest impression.
