About 1 year ago, I started gaining weight. At first it was a little bit, then I was on 15 abilify, and it was more, then 30 abilify and more, then 30 abilify plus celexa for psychotic depression and it was more, and now...now I'm a fatty fatty no friends. Well, I do have a few friends, but I'm still tubby, and it sucks. I've never been this heavy. Its embarrassing, really; its a stigma (overweight) that you can't escape b/c, you know, ITS YOUR BODY.
I'm making some positive changes. I've given up most sweets and I'm transitioning into a vegetarian diet. I gave up soda (even the diet ones apparently cause problems) and iced coffee drinks (except for the ones I make myself with milk, instant coffee, and splenda--surprisingly delicious....).
I'm considering working my way into a modified juice fast. I've juice fasted before, for 3 weeks or so; I lived on cigarettes, carrot juice, coffee, and Klonopin. I lost 25lbs.
This time around, I think I'll do it without the cigarettes, coffee, and Klonopin, but I'll add in avocados and bananas, since these can apparently slow down the "detox" by adding calories, fat, carbs, and sugars to the mix. The one thing I hated about juice fasting was the intense anxiety and sadness. Maybe adding in the avocados and bananas will help?
I know this sounds terrible, but I can't even think about exercise right now. The weight gain was fairly rapid, and I barely understand how to maneuver in my bloated frame. One reason juice fasting appeals to me is that I could drop a decent amount of weight, get myself down to a more workable size, and then start exercising to get svelte again.
Ugh. So frustrating. On the plus side, my skin and hair look awesome, according to family and friends, so at least I look like a well-nourished, healthy fatty.

Perhaps more vegetables than fruits in the juice?
What about vegetable protein? I don't digest lentils well.
We had this wonderful meal in Japan quite by accident. They didn't want us in there because they spoke no English and we spoke no Japanese. It was a broth made, I think now, from a sweet rice miso, about the consistency of milk or a bit thicker, and to put in that were lots of different types of small mushrooms and various vegetables which I now forget and of course tofu. Once the contents of the broth were eaten the broth itself was good to drink. Best meal I have ever had.

For the time being, I'm getting plenty of vegetable protein and lots of my fat from vegetable sources (mainly avocados and olive oil). I think juice fasts are usually pretty strict about protein (as in its a no-go for the Orthodox juice faster), but I have thought about modifying the plan to include protein. I saw long-term fasting tips for some political group--Code Pink, maybe?--and they recommended some sort of powdered protein smoothie to keep your protein levels up. The juice fasting people claim that the lack of protein forces your body to eat up your fatty tissues, which is what juice fasting is all about.
I just don't know. For now, its a rather boring vegetarian diet (I do best on boring meal plans when I'm trying to reduce) and lots of coffee. Oh, and cigarettes. Love my cigarettes.

CE you need protein as all your internal organs are made of proteins including the heart muscle. If you weight without protein you also lose a lot of muscle. See my point? Phillipa

Hey Phillipa. Yeah, you're right. The more I read about it and think about it, the less appealing a juice fast (or "juice feast" as the fans put it) seems. I'm thinking I'll just stick to a vegetarian diet with lots of fat and but not too many carbs or calories (its possible when you're dealing with plant-based fats) and hope for the best. I think after I drop a little bit of weight I'll be able to start exercising more and then I'll slowly, but surely, get to where I want to be.
Plus, looking back, juice fasting is *stressful*. Your stomach hurts, your head hurts, there's anxiety, insomnia, daytime drowsiness, weakness and generally a feeling of being unwell. I know our ancient ancestors often went without food, but now I know why they started farming: HUNGER SUCKS!
Anyway, thanks again.

>Hi,
Have you had a FULL blood workup regarding 1) blood sugar levels (abilify can raise them) 2)All hormone tests (testosterone/estrogen, pituitary function, thyroid function)? These are direly important for all of us on psych meds.
Best,
Jay

I don't think you need to go on a minimalist diet. Aerobic exercise coupled with healthy eating is the better way to lose weight I think. If you remove soda and junk food from your diet, significantly reduce snacking, walk 30-45min 4 or 5 times a week, you will see noticeable results in the mirror after 3-4 weeks. Soda is a huge culprit for weight gain - it's basically a massive amount of empty calories already in liquid form that takes only a few gulps to finish.
I gained a lot of weight too because I couldn't go outside because of social phobia and couldn't even muster the energy to exercise indoors. Plus comfort eating is something that I do very frequently - multiple times during the day. But I was able to lose weight with this very simple routine. Walking and running is really good exercise - it uses a lot of muscles in a way your body was built to do and doesn't need any equipment, If you have any hills or your route the better. You can get nuts and fruits and veggies for snacks.
I don't think it is a good idea to do extreme diets when taking meds.

I lost 2-3 lb's a month for 10 months and kept it off it, was so easy. Small breakfast (don't skip it) with in 30 minutes of waking to raise metabolism. I then eat anything I wanted for lunch, 2 bacon chease burgers and fries were my favorite but no bread. I ate anything I wanted as long as it was high protien and I ate a very big meal at lunch, I didn't care about fat. I didn't eat after about 4 O clock in the afternoon unless I didn't eat enough at lunch, on small luch days I ate a very small dinner no later then 6pm. I did go to bed a little hungry at times but I stuck to it.
This is the end of the thread.
