2 Dead, Scores Injured in Boston Marathon Explosions

DisclosuresApr 15, 2013

Two people have died and dozens of people were injured in twin blasts near the finish line of the Boston Marathon today. The incident took place about 4 hours after the men's race start.

The 2 explosions were nearly simultaneous and about 50 to 100 yards apart. "All victims have been removed from the scene," said Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis during a press conference at the Westin Hotel in Boston.

At least 100 people are being treated at area hospitals, he said.

The police have determined that there was a third incident at JFK Library about 4:30 PM. "This is very much an ongoing event," Davis said. Police are not sure if that third explosion is related to the others, but they are treating it that way, he said.

No injuries were reported from the explosion at JFK Library.

When asked to characterize whether the explosions were intentional, Davis declined to say definitively, but added, "based on what happened you can draw your own conclusions."

Another explosion in the area of Boylston Street near the end of the marathon was a controlled explosion, Davis said.

Photos and video from several media outlets soon after the twin explosions showed fire at street level and clouds of smoke in the air.

The Boston Globe's Twitter feed @BostonGlobe reported that "scores of people fell and were injured. Some could be seen to have lost limbs; others were unconscious."

Several metropolitan hospitals received wounded runners and spectators.

Information from Industry

Massachusetts General Hospital is treating 19 people, spokesperson Kristen Chadwick told Medscape Medical News. She declined to describe the injuries.

Tufts Medical Center is treating 9 people with blast-related injuries, media relations specialist Jeremy Lechan, told Medscape Medical News.

All off-duty police officers have been called in, according to @BostonGlobe.

Hundreds of people had been in the area, both runner and spectators, celebrating the end of the race.

Although there is much speculation on who is behind the blasts, there is no word yet on whether these were bombs or accidental explosions. Some observers note that today is Patriots' Day, and it is also the deadline for filing tax returns in the United States.

Robert Lowes and Sean Swint contributed to this report.

Do you think it was some sort of terrorism? Or have you heard an update? The Boston Marathon is dear to heart as when was able to run my dream was to run it. I ran with Jim Fixx. He was one of the first in this great marathon. Phillipa

Terrorism is the systematic use of terror, often violent, especially as a means of coercion. In the international community, however, terrorism has no legally binding, criminal law definition. [1][2] Common definitions of terrorism refer only to those violent acts which are intended to create fear (terror); are perpetrated for a religious, political or, ideological goal; and deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants (civilians).

Sounds like tertorism to me

I sincerly hope it isn't though. Maybe someone with a grudge against runners. Maybe applied and didn't get into the race?

A neighbor of mine who rides bikes with my husband once a week lost his 8 year old son. His younger daughter lost a leg and his wife got a nail in her brain and is in critical care. 170 people are estimated to be injured, many critically, and 3 people died immediately. All day long, the police have had my neighbor's street blocked off to keep the media out. It's devastating anyway when things like this happens, but particularly when they happen to someone you know.

My husband and I were talking tonight and said, we hope they find the person who did this. He said, if they do, they should just kill him, not bother with the public expense of a trial. This is very unlike my husband, but it's so infuriating that someone would do this at such a feel good event.

The marathon isn't at all competitive. Nobody cares about the winners. People line the streets all afternoon urging on the latecomers -- just a mile left, you can do it. It's a blast to watch.

Martin Richard? Oh no.

I have cried every time they tell your neighbor's story on all the news channels. It's horrific and insane. Losing a child is never okay but somehow hurricanes or cancer or whatever - things we largely can't control **at all** seem....better, although that word sucks.

But at the hands of cowardly, disturbed, evil *ssh*l*s? No. :-((

And then the devastation to the rest of his family is too much to comprehend.

What a beautiful young man. It was just taking my breath away somehow that your screen name is baseball and it's reported Martin loved baseball and I love baseball....and I am born and raised in Massachusetts.

No words, though I managed to use plenty :-((

Baseball I know what you mean. When it hits at home it really hits and to know the family. And from what I heard the Marathon was dedicated to Sandy Hook kids of Ct where I'm from. And friends of mine on facebook from high school attended the funerals. A double tragedy. I heard that the bombs were made in a home in a pressure cooker with shrapnel to cause as mush devastation & injury as possible then placed in trash cans along the route. I used to watch the NYC marathon from the side lines & know what you mean it's all about the dedication & hard work of the runners. Somes on skateboards with missing limbs, blind runners with coaches, and those in wheelchairs. It makes me sick. I'm sorry you had to experience this. Not sure where it's safe anymore. And your little boy the friend I heard he was running for Sandy Hook also. There are no real words are there? Phillipa

Yes, and it was mentioned here that survivors from Sandy Hook (sp?) were in the stand, or something like that, watching it all.
