my last mac (must be about six years old) was quick to wake up. (((black mac how i loved you))). even though it had a little chipping on the case and the battery was weirdly bloated and distorted from the extreme temperatures it used to run to... then it got no longer software supported for this and that and the next thing... i contemplated installing something unix (perhaps I still will).
i got a 13 inch (not retina) at the start of this year. so... mid 2012 model. the most annoying thing about it is how slow it is to wake up in the mornings. not at other times. just in the mornings. i mean... really very slow. about as slow as booting it up from off would be.
turns out it is to do with the new operating system software. after around 4 hours connected to mains power supply (i leave it on overnight) it goes into 'deep sleep' mode. then when i wake it up it has to do stuff... you can delay the amount of time before it goes into that mode in order to prevent it, basically. it makes SO MUCH difference. i'm a lot happier. it used to make weird complaining noises when i disturbed the mains supply when it was sleepy too. which i didn't like. i don't like it to be doing stuff when i'm trying to move it into carry case to get it out the door.
how are you supposed to look after batteries these days? are you still supposed to do calibrating charges of totally depleating / totally charging? i leave mine plugged into the mains whenever i'm home to ensure it is fully charged for when mains isn't around. i know you weren't supposed to but is that cool now?
perhaps i shouldn't worry... i'm happy with the way my last computers battery life served me. it held out pretty good right up until i got this one. whereupon it promptly died (only lasts for around 15 minutes off mains now).
anyone else have the slow to wake issue?

Sorry I cannot help! I have a mac, 2009, and it's pretty awesome. So far... fingers crossed! I did have some issues with it in the past when I first got it -- I bought it used from a friend. glad you're happy with it now.

If you like I can forward your query to my relation who works at Apple Corporate. He either knows everything, or knows the people who do. Seriously.
I don't think they are supposed to so slow in waking up. And your battery question is interesting. I didn't think we had to run them into the ground before charging anymore.Let me know if You'd like me to pursue it further.

ah. no, i fixed it.
it is a known issue with mountain lion.
in order for the battery life to be 30 days (without use) they changed the default sleep parameters. you can change them back and it will wake up faster. in terminal you type:
$ sudo pmset -g
it will tell you standbydelay time in seconds. I changed the time to 24 hours by typing:
$ sudo pmset -a standbydelay 86400
then i restarted it (don't know if i needed to) and it is all better now!
i can't believe i waited so long to sort this out... everyone was like 'oh you have a new macbook pro and you are complaining it is slow, poor you'. but it was slow to wake up. way slow. and it is better now.

Good! I don't speak computer hardware or programming, having lost what little I knew ages ago.
Keep my "inside guy" in mind for future issues, though.

I think Apple uses Lithium ion batteries. They are safe batteries but if one is getting distorted or swells or gets too hot, then you are typing on a bomb. If Apple uses Chinese made batteries I would try to find a Japanese made battery for it.
