Sadness is: Someone gives you a million dollars and you get excited. You feel a lot of things, including gratitude. You may still be sad, but not for long.
Depression is: Someone hands you a million dollars and you ask if they can come back in a few weeks because you can't deal with it right now. It does not register on the happy scale or the relief scale. It's simply meaningless. Just this side of thanks but no thanks.
That's the way someone feels about everything in their life when they are depressed.
