For One Whole Hour I Felt Surcease of All the Pain

For one whole hour I felt
Surcease of all the pain.
For one whole hour it lasted--
And then it came again.

And in that hour I witnessed
How life is supposed to be.
I laughed and joked and listened,
With true alacrity,

And, as I spoke, all noticed
How clever I can be
And smiled, and said, Why don't we
Have some breakfast sometime!

But next time when we met again, I could not stanch the pain.
Puzzlement reclaimed them all.

Breakfast never came.
