Thinking about School

Posted by Angela2 on October 29, 2008, at 14:19:24

I have a BA in psych. But I kind of want to go back to school and major in art. I don't know what kind of job I would have when I'm done. And I'm thinking about going to a 2 year community college to do it. Am I weird?? Is it weird to want to go to a 2 year school without definite plans while also having a degree from a 4 year school?

I don't think it's weird. You gotta do what you enjoy and what you enjoy doing. I'm sure there are jobs in the art world... does your old uni offer career counseling to alumni? If so, you could go and get some options for working in the art world. Or maybe the community college will be able to help you out in that area?

Nothing weird at all.

I realized a few years back that I had no idea what existed in this world, nor what interested me, so I decided to start taking some classes at a local junior college. My plan was simple: if it looked interesting to me, I'd take it, and I'd see where that led me.

And -- now I know what I want to do when I grow up. (In fact, one of the best pieces of advice anyone ever gave me was from my therapist: when I said I wanted a referral to a good career counselor, she recommended I take one of the career counseling classes at the school. Best thing I ever did -- all the assessments we took actually guided me towards one of those things I'd always wanted to do, and never thought I could.

So, nothing weird. Entirely the opposite -- probably the best thing I can think of for you to do. I wish you the very best with it.
