Currently on week 5 of Lamictal starter pack, ramping up for the big dose...I've not seen my Dr. since starting but will need to touch base to get it from the pharmacy. I'm also taking Effexor 150mg and seem to be existing still. The Lamictal was prescribed to me to help overcome addiction to cocaine. Also prescribed to take as needed is Provigil, kind of an upper used to treat patients with narcolepsy. (sp?) Again, I'm existing and also have gained about 7 lbs since my first dose. I don't believe it's all related to the Lamictal, but I started using cocaine 5 months ago to lose weight.....4 months later I realized I couldn't stop when I wanted to stop. It's an evil drug, but I'm thankful for being able to recognize and admit it was a problem and that I sought help right away. Anyway, I'm concerned about the long term effects of Lamictal. Anyone been taking it longer than 5 years, and if so, have you needed to increase your dose since the beginning of your treatment ?

I'm not sure if Lamictal has been on the market for 5 years... I was taking 150/day for about two years when I was abusing cocaine and now I'm on 300/day in part to control the mania induced by other prescriptions I'm taking for ADD. I feel more stable than I ever have, but be careful with your dosing schedule - Don't miss a single dose! I missed one by 4 hours a couple months ago and went into manic insanity -- thinking *I* was the second coming of Christ among other things.
I have had no side effects from the Lamictal aside from constapation - which I think was really activating a side effect from my other medications.
