Topamax and Alcoholism

No lectures. If anyone IS interested in trying to quit drinking, try Topamax.

Google search on Topamax and "alcohol cravings". Articles were published last summer and fall showing excellent results. I personally aware of several recent amazing success stories.

Ramp up from slowly from 25mg to 100mg or whatever you doc tells you. Stops those fun carb cravings too.

Life is better without hangovers.

yet another anti-epileptic drug. are these fashionable these days? if it worked for you...then that's great! but you must realize that you must want help first, and want to stop. how much of it do you contribute to the drug, and how much of it do you contribute to your wanting to stop? just wondering...AA has high records of success too. maybe they should try to put it into a pill form...

Yes, I am very aware of the research done on Topamax and alcoholics, as is my pdoc. Have been on the drug since July for mood stabilization and for alcohol cravings.

Results: Great med for mood stabilization and side effects are sometimes bothersome: tingling in hands and feet, cognitive slowness at times, like trying to remember someone's name or the name of a book or movie or phone number and you can't... plus loss of appetite. I started at 50mg and have titrated up to 300mg a day.

As far as working for cravings: NADA. The drug has not done that at all for me. Alcoholics will drink regardless; I suggest reading the chapter in the Big Book about "More About Alcoholism" There is no magic bullet, unfortunately. Just like when someone relapses, they are asked why they didn't call someone...what a question!!! Anyone who wants to drink badly enough will drink.

Perhaps topamax can help some folks, that is wonderful. Everyone is different. But for this alcoholic, the solution doesn't come in a prescription vial.

Stupid question probably because you seem to know what you're doing, but have you tried naltrexone? While I don't believe any drug could stop my cravings because I know I drink to escape my emotions, I have tried this drug. It didn't stop my cravings but when I did have a drink I didn't get high and/or didn't feel good. Surprisingly that seemed enough to make me stop (for that night anyway!). At this point, knowing that I won't get that warmy, numb feeling has kept me from drinking today at least.

To say that alcoholics will drink regardless does not explain why Topamax worked better than the placebo in the double blind studies I looked at. I don't sell the stuff. I'm just reporting what I read.

I'll find the journal citations if anyone is interested.

Of course it is not a magic pill, and of course it won't help everyone and yup, it's going to have side affects. I just know that it's new for a lot of people and it's something to try in addition to AA and other supports. Because it didn't help you doesn't mean it won't help anyone.

I'm just offering some info to those who had not heard of a new possible tool to add to their their arsenel. Em

of course Emmy, you are right, if it helps, it helps! naltrexone is also a thought, but it's just like antabuse in as much as you must TAKE it....

It was not my intention to say that topamax would not help some alcoholics, only that medications would not effect a cure for alcoholism.

I have read about the studies and know that the folks who took topamax drank less than those on the placebo. There is also a radio show that has a web site, The Infinite Mind, that had the researcher who performed the study on their show.

Alcoholism is a many-faceted thing. I guess it is important to realize that medication to decrease cravings is only, as you say, one more thing to add to the arsenal, not the arsenal itself.

It's because of my own experience with the drug that I say this. I could not rely on topamax to keep me sober, and it did not solve the problem of craving for me. This does not mean, however, that is doesn't do this for others. If there was a pill that would make me immune from the "charms" of alcohol, I'd be first in line for a dose. But I doubt there will ever be one because, as I strongly suspect, there are many levels to addiction besides physical.
Peace, Helen.
