If not maybe you can help with my question. For years I drank 5-6beers a night. It always slowed me down so I could sleep even while taking xanax. I also drank with valium. I always felt great during the day and functioned vcry highly as a Charge RN. So how come since I stopped drinking over 8yrs ago have I been depressed, anxious and had to quit working when I quit. I don't get it. I thought Ad's and valium without the alchol were supposed to make you feel better not worse. Is there something in beer or wine that isn't in the benzos. Thanks, Phillipa

I think that if you drink alchohol with benzos then you get 4X the affect of BOTH the benzos and the alchohol. They combine like that. Thats why you aren't supposed to drink on them, but thats also why it is so very tempting to...

Hi Phillipa, so maybe alcohol, or something associated with it, just suites you.

If you're still reading, I smoke mj (tried to quit unsuccessfully, will try again and again ...) because it increases the effect of my AD. And beer apparently has the same effect on the nervous system that mj does, is what I've been told. Not alcohol, but beer in particular. That might explain the good mood, and it may also explain why so many men prefer beer over other alcoholic beverages. Women, too. And just think, beer has been made by us since ancient times.. there's a reason for that!
You know, I suspect that if you were functioning highly before, and you're not now, you can do it all again, the high functioning, by analyzing what you were doing then and the effects it was all having.. maybe you need to drink beer, to maintain what you need in your life. Why was it wrong, why did you quit?

That's how I found it. Is it the hops? my problem was the yeast.

Well for whatever reason I never received notification of these replies until today. I've read back over the Thread. I stopped the beer because the pdoc put me on chloral hydrate. If I drank with that it would be a Mickey Finn, not good. So was told to stop. Now I am off the CH, but still on valium. But I never have any fun or feel good. Every day is boring. Not working, etc because I'm afraid to. Now after 8 yrs I'm afraid of alchohol. I just went to a dinner and did order a wine spritzer. But I couldn't drink it I was too afraid that it would do something bad to me. Fondly, Phillipa

Oh, my poor, poor friend. I certainly feel your plight. I was once somewhat forced into a period of absenince by my girlfreind and family. Granted, at the time, I was drinking far too much beer, but I was pretty happy. During my seven month sobriety period I felt pretty depressed and just not happy. I am not saying that sobriety is not a great thing for some, but I happen to believe that alcohol can be a VERY healthy thing. I am not exactly sure why you were trying to give it up, but I do know that some jack-*sses try to tell you what makes them happy and think that everyone should follow their perfect lead. I may be putting my head on the platter here, but I think that if something makes you feel better, YOU should be the only one to decide if it's right for you. Also (I may be the only one in the who thinks this), benzo's suck. Alcohol is far better and more effective than the B.S. the pharmacutical campanies push. I hope no matter what you do, you feel better. AD's can certainly help, but there is not perfect cure and I hope you do WHATEVER works best for YOU.

Now Phillipa I don't want to preach, but it's a very bad bargain to exchange beer for chloral hydrate:-)

Declan, I didn't do it! The pdoc put me on it while I was in the hospital. He told me it was used for babies and the elderly and was completely safe. I took it for 8 years. Fondly, Phillipa
