Hi everybody,
My pdoc just prescribed me 2 mg of klonipin a day for anxiety and alcohol cravings. He said the klonipin binds to the same receptors as alcohol, so my cravings should go away. I've been taking it for a week now and all I feel is like 2 of the 7 dwarfs - Sleepy and Dopey. Still have alcohol cravings and anxiety. Has anybody ever heard of someone being prescribed klonipin for this reason? Or is my pdoc nuts? I also read klonipin is very addictive and difficult to get off it. Am I in over my head taking this stuff? Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks

Is Klonipin a benzo? I just wondered because I have heard of benzo's being prescribed to prevent seizures that can happen from sudden withdrawal from heavy drinking.
They used to prescribe it (or over-prescribe it depending on your views) to people in detox. I didn't think it helped with the cravings particularly...

Yeah, klonipin is a benzo. I also have anxiety, and my pdoc was thinking the anxiety was causing me to drink. I wasn't drinking heavily everyday, so they're not using it to detox me. And if this stuff is supposed to bind to the same receptors as alcohol, as my pdoc says, and stop the alcohol cravings - well, it isn't! Anybody heard of a drug (NOT Antabuse) that helps with beer cravings?

No personal experience with Naltrexone but I think there's a lot of info in the PB archives on it.

There is a herb. Kudzu?? I tried it once and it seemed to work and had no other effect that I could notice.

DONT.... repeat DONT start taking Klonopin! Its extremely addictive and can cause more harm than you have ever imagined. Believe me I've been experiencing severe Klonopin w/d's for the past 9 months and I was only taking 1 mg for a little over a year.

very true-klonopin is extremely addicting but i have found it 2 b very helpful w/ my social phobia and i am able to go w/o it. I think that most of the benzos can b addictive just like any other drug....u have to be careful b/c every1 reacts diff.
