Why people with schizophrenia smoke cigarates

Because it causes the release of dopamine in their fore brains. They need it for gateing. If you block release of Dopamine in the forebain with PCP a person will become schizophrenic. The cause of this illness is totally unknown. Many brain abnormalities are seen on cat scans.

I totally agree with you. It is the same with pot. Pot increase dopamine release in the prefrontal cortex. Same with caffiene.

There is a large consuption of all three of these drugs in schitsophrenia.

The APs don't do enough to target this aspect of the disease.

Dopamine is needed to gate incoming stimuli. To little dopamine causes psychosis. The hippocamus also needs Dopamine.THe brain has 3 neurochemical release systems .Cigarates work on the quick release ion system. The second messenger system appears to be defective.Fish oil may help to rebuild the brain damage.Looks like loss of brain matter with enlargement of ventricals.I belive it is inherited in some cases.Could have many causes.

The hippocampus does need dopamine, but too much limbic dopamine can make you paranoid. Whereas, like you said, too little in the frontal cortex, leaves a human unable to shut off overactive limbic circutry.

Too little dopamine causes paranodia .The hippocamus attachs meanings to the world. It cannot work without dopamine. When dopamine levels get too high the brain cells shut off the release of dopamine and you become paranoid.Say someone says hello to you and you wounder what that sob meant by that ,all day.You hear a knock on the door and freak out.It is strange, but lack of dopamine is the problem. The release of dopamine is shut down because of the high levels.

I don't know about this. Stimulants like amphetamine, cocaine, etc robustly increase the release of dopamine and are notorious for causing paranoid and schitophrenic like behavior ie "amphetamine psychosis". The behavioral effects of stimulants can be blocked by neruoleptics which do not affect the release of dopamine, but rather block its effects in certain limbic circutry.

I think stimulants are abused in shitsophrenia because they treat the negative symptoms of the disorder. They certainly do not cure the disorder.

Other drugs like valproate, lithium, and vitamin C, also have antipsychotic acitivity, and they too lower dopamine release in certain limbic circuts such as the amygdala.

Its a lot more complex than just saying shitsophrenia is due to too much or too little dopamine. Because it is dependant on the region.

Nicotine does a lot more than just affect dopamine release. Some theorieze that its effects in schitsophrenia might be related to nicotinic receptor activation, or even activation of the 5-ht1a receptor which stops dopamine release in the NAA, and amygdala.

The true cause of any mental illness is unknown. There is no known cure for mental illness. You will have it all your life, once you become ill. There looks to be something wrong with the brain.Nobody knows what it is,for sure.It looks to be genetic ,in most cases. One theory of schizophrenia says it is caused by a virus or a cat parasite.Nobody really knows what these drugs do to the brain or how they help. There are no answers and it is all so mixed up.It is all very complicated .It is a lot more than a SE shortage. It is a real medical mystery.May take 500 years to solve. No illness of the brain has ever been cured. You do not even know the cause, no less the cure. There is no drug that can cure mental illness. That is the truth.

Never said there was

I never said that these drugs cure the illness. I totally agree with you that there are lot of unanswered questions.

We do have some medications that help. They're not a cure, and they don't fix all the problems, but they do help some.
