addicted to psychotropic drugs

Posted by Sonya on July 29, 2005, at 12:50:02

I know I have an addiction problem. I've never liked the person I am so I want to pop a pill (or several) to be someone else. But has anyone ever felt like they wanted to take antidepressants, mood stabilizers or antipsychotics to *change* who they were? They're not addictive drugs and the side effects are often intolerable. But I'm more afraid of not taking anything and having to confront the real me.

I'm sure I'm not expressing this adequately. Does anyone know what I'm getting at?

Yeah I do know what you're talking about. I don't understand it, I mean enjoyable drugs are one thing and therapeutic drugs another. But for the same reasons you refer to I took AP drugs (old sort) for a couple of years. It's got to be either stubbornness or stupidity. I really wanted psychiatry to be other than what it was. I was looking in the wrong place for something like religion or relationship.

Perfectly said! Psychiatry hasn't been the answer for me.
