Ritalin child. Did you turn to street drugs?

Posted by corafree on October 18, 2006, at 14:53:13

Has anyone had hyperactivity as a child treated w/ Ritalin, and then as a teen (Ritalin taken away) found that methamphetamine worked 'similarly' in that you could converse more clearly, concentrate better, complete projects, etc etc?

If so, did you become addicted, kick it, and then cold turkey 'all drugs' and attend NA, ... or did you seek pscyh help and also attend NA?

tks, cf

AD/HD is generally accepted as being a dopamine deficency in the frontal cortex. Amphetamines supply dopamine to this area, its not that hard to make a leap of logic and say you're simply self medicating. Unfortunately i dont know what to tell you because you're in between a rock and a hard place. If you admit to having drug issues you'll never get the proper treatment for ad/hd and if you dont your life could be very unhappy.

This is a very bad time to be a meth user. Its public enemy number 1 as far as the DEA is concerned and simply possessing a small amount for personal use will ruin your life and get you prison time.

Dont let it drag you down and allow people to make you feel guilty for having some sort of neurochemical imbalance.

my advice:

go to a doctor, tell them as a child you were diagnosed with ad/hd, and you feel as if you have the same symptoms as an adult. The doc will do several tests on you, in which case, if you still do have symptoms of ad/hd, you will be able to get prescribed either Adderall or Dexedrine, or some other amphetamine that will be legal and will cure your need for more dopamine.

BUT you have GOT to quit the crystal. habitual use of ice is like signing your own death certificate, and paying hard earned cash for the certificate you will be signing.

by the way, i've been there/done that. my drug of choice was heroin though...and i'm now attending a methadone clinic.

Go to a doc and seriously try to get yourself fixed up with some legal prescription. You'll be much happier with it and it won't be the death of you...

Hi dbc!

I'm referring to a person I know, and the system is well aware of his prior meth use, so it's just as you said; 'he's stuck'.

They'll not give him a 'once-over re: ADHD' knowing they would need to treat him w/ a stimulant.

They've labeled him bipolar.

He is manic. Very, very few low times at all.

He's on a regular bipolar regimen, Depakote etc., and I don't think he follows it.

I had the reverse. Heavy use of MDMA, MDA, amphetamines, alcohol, got clean and sober, then diagnosed with ADHD and now prescribed stimulants. The irony is that the therapeutic dose of say dexedrine is about 1/20th of what I would use recreatonally.

I suspect some part of the drug use was unwitting self-medication.
