Naltrexone

For what it's worth - it's helped me cut back drinking. Instead of drinking every night, I can usually stick to just weekends.

We are following the "harm reduction" path, since I'm just not up for abstinence.

It helps because it cuts out some of the pleasure alcohol gives you?

No, pleasure is the same. It's just that the craving to drink isn't so strong. So, it feels like a *decision*...usually I wouldn't even THINK about it. I'd just drink, cuz that's what I do. I drink. But with this med, I have some time to think about it, and decide whether I'm going to drink tonight. Hope that makes sense.

I have been taking Campral for over a year and a half. It is a critical med for me.

Regarding the pleasure issue...news update.

It's now true. Little pleasure in drinking at this point. Also a loss of appetite (I had that with Topamax too). Few, if any, cravings and not much desire to drink. Haven't drank in 11 days. That's forever for me.

Still don't feel committed to abstinence - I'm working on just drinking less. Seems easier with this pharm help.

This is a bit off-topic, but when I was on Naltrexone I would feel euphoric after I'd gone to bed. I think it may be to do with the endorphins which we manufacture round that time, but this is not the complete answer, since Naltrexone blocks them
