Campral

Posted by greenline on January 27, 2007, at 16:02:00

Hi, I have a question for anyone who has ever been prescribed Campral. Have you ever heard of it being prescribed to help get off benzo's? I went to a new psychitrist lately and he gave me a prescription for Campral. I DO NOT have a drinking problem. In the first place he told me it was something like a food supplement and that it would help my brain receptors recover from the amount of Ativan I have been taking (prescribed). I HATE being lied to. I looked it up when I got home and saw that it was for alcohol dependance. So do you think he thinks I was just some big liar about what I drink? I am really kind of mad about this. I have been taking the stuff but it's been making me really tired and today I almost had a panic attack after I took it. I can't find anything on the net about this helping with benzo addiction what so ever. Please help! Thanks..

I remember Larry Hoover saying something like Campral was just the amino acid taurine bonded to something or other so they could patent it, and I think he said that judicious dosing with taurine would achieve the same result.
That's at a tangent to your question.
You could look in the archives.

My doctor prescriped this to me today to withdraw from Ativan. I read on the internet it's for alcohol withdrawal. Does this mean he thinks I am alcohol dependant or an alcoholic? I told him that I drank socially and a bit more when I was upset. Thanks, Green

You might have more luck on the Substance Use Board.

There are people around here who have used it, but I haven't.

I take Campral. I started out at 6 x 333mg Campral per day. Now taking 2x333mg daily to help me maintain sobriety. It really let the preoccupied thinking subside.

I used Campral for a while. It was used with Naltrexone. I got the impression that the combo was being explored for all addictions or addictive behaviors. Naltrexone was not to my liking but I carried on with the Campral and did better than normal for sobriety. The complete lack of info on it felt suspicious to me.

Green,

My pdoc prescribed me Campral as well. This is for both benzo withdrawal and as a potential mood stabilizer (I'm bipolar II and allergic to most of the usual mood stabilizers). So you're not alone, although my situation is a little more complicated.

I've just started it (2 x 333mg) my only complaint is some tiredness and maybe a little push downward in mood. Too early to tell as far as mood stabilization.

Anyway, there's some pharmacological basis to thinking that it might be good for withdrawal/tapering of benzos. I'm going to try to cut my Klonopin a bit and see if it helps, but again it'll take a while to know whether the Campral helps.

Have you started the Campral? If so, have you been able to reduce your Ativan without major issues?

Let me know,
