Cleaning Up

Posted by thereddragon on June 30, 2008, at 14:10:52

Hello all, I'm new to the board; I joined because I'm looking to talk to people that can at least understand what I am going through.

For about 4 years, I have had a 6-pack of beer a day habit. As of 2 days ago, I decided that enough was enough; as I could see that not only was it hurting me, but, it was also clearly hurting my fiance.

I'm feeling pretty sick and agitated now, with a bit of the shakes. I'm scared too, because I know how dangerous the detox can be. I'm staying at home for the time being; unless the symptoms get worse. My fiance has offered his full support as well, which I am grateful for.

In the meantime, what would you guys suggest in terms of easing the withdrawal symptoms without the aid of medication?

Hello, welcome

I'm a bit unclear how much beer is a '6-pack of beer a day habit'.
Like 6 times 6 375ml bottles?
Can't be?
Whatever, never mind.
On the alternative front people mention the amino acid taurine, but I think the dose is fiddly.
It is said that acamprosate (Campral) is taurine bonded with some radical or other.

I detox 1x at home, was rough, but made it somehow. LOTSA anxiety, sounds, shakes, confusion. Lasted awhile...
Then one time in hosp detox and that was easy cuz they drug you up and no detox effects.
Good for you for stopping.
Your liver will thank you as well.

So far I'm doing really well, thank you all for the information and support. I did get the feeling like I was "crawling up the walls" for the first little while. I've now been clean for over a week, and I'm not feeling it as bad. The shakes went away, and I am not as irritable. :)

That all sounds great, and you should be very proud of yourself. But it's just the beginning in many cases. Get some help on how to live sober. Getting off the substance is one thing, but living without it (and dealing with the triggers) is another.
So keep up the good work. You can do it!
