diphenydramine and lorzepam withdrawal?

Posted by ramsea on November 6, 2006, at 8:22:30

i asked this in another forum. i think Jay is right to think of bringing it here instead.

please note that i do know about the dangers of abrubt cessation of benzodiazipines and risk of seizure, psychiatric conditions and even death (though i am not sure which sort of reason is behind death except related to having seizures in the wrong place.)

anyway i am just interested in anyone's exeprience or knowledge of using benydryl to ease side effects of withdrawal from ativan. no lectures please.

I've used diphenhydramine to allow sleep in methadone withdrawal, and it was effective enough (if not very nice) at that.
It will help to promote sleep and physical relaxation.

What about skullcap? That might be useful too.

that's interesting, declan. thanks for the insight. i have some valerian too to help ease matters. it seems to be helping a bit. my doctor is useless to me now--he doesn't believe benzo withdrawal from smaller dose should cause a problem but i've had anxiety up the oozoo.

I used diphenhydramine in benzo withdrawal and found it effective for sleep. I think promethazine (Phenergan) was even more effective at suppressing the nausea and helping me sleep. Diphenhydramine sometimes made me feel jumpy and jittery if I was feeling agitated to begin with. These drugs do lower the seizure threshold, just something to be aware of, though it wasn't a problem for me quitting cold turkey from 10mg Klonopin and 400mg tramadol, but I was also taking Lamictal (anticonvulsant) at that time.

Ginger drops/biscuits and peppermint tea were helpful with nausea and bowel cramps, and pickled beetroot (!) was also very effective for this -discovered that one by accident and I suspect it may not work for others ;-)

Valerian and skullcap were helpful once the worst was over and I am still using them now, alongside other herbs with good results.

Good luck with your withdrawal.
