Wellbutrin.....withdrawal?.....Help!

Posted by PattyG on January 13, 2000, at 21:01:06

I'll search for previous messages, but need some help by tomorrow! My son saw the neurologist today and he thinks his seizure was due to Wellbutrin (which he's been taking for about 1 1/2 years.....along with Effexor.) The psydoc just had him cut Wellbutrin in half from SR 100 mg. 2X daily. Is there ANY chance that the problem is with *withdrawal* from the Wellbutrin???? What's been the best method to wean off of Wellbutrin? Help!

Dear Patty,
I'm sorry to hear about your son but not really surprised- most pdocs aren't well educated in AD withdrawal. Wellbutrin is one of the drugs I'm withdrawing from and I am going at a rate of 10% every 4-7 days. So far I've had no real symptoms, (wellbutrin was contraindicated for me because a side effect can be seizures in people who have had seizures -like me- but it's a first choice AD in bipolar disorder) I see an addiction specialist who is very knowledgeable in psychotropic drug withdrawal. Apparently some people are very sensitive to AD withdrawal and your son is one of them. Can you call around and get an opinion from an addiction specialist who is familiar with this? Also there can be psychological symptoms in addition to the physical, like anxiety, insomnia, mood lability. Best of luck to your son.

Thanks so much for responding. But how the devil do I go about finding an addictions specialist with knowledge about psychotropic drug withdrawal?! (On a Friday afternoon, no less!) Geez........what to do, what to do.

Hi,
Can you talk to your neurologist Patty? Obviously if he feels the wellbutrin withdrawal caused the seizures, than he should have suggestions on a taper schedule. If not, speak to your pharmacist and tell him/her what's going on, they have a wealth of information. I am tapering from 5 drugs, hence my need for a specialist. Hopefully one of those sources will be of help. Sam- lots of people benefit from wellbutrin, as long as you have no history of seizures, bulima and I think head injury you should be fine. I hope it works well for you; I remember having some nausea initially but that stopped after a week or so. Best of luck.

Why not just add Wellbutrin to the Luvox? I haven't read or heard anything indicating that such a combination would produce significant adverse effects. Combining Wellbutrin with a serotonin reuptake inhibitor like Luvox, Zoloft, Paxil, or Effexor, seems to be becoming more popular. I know one person for whom the addition of Wellbutrin to Effexor brought about a full remission (or nearly so).

In addition, Wellbutrin is often used to treat the sexual side-effects that often accompany the use of SSRIs

I too am on Wellbutrin and weaning off of Effexor. Once I get through that (which is a nightmare) I will go off of the Wellbutrin. My doctor says that there is no side effects form the Wellbutrin.
Do you know what I can expect.
Thanks, Pamela

Pam,

I have a few friends that were on Wellbutrin that had side efffects like mine; memory issues, confusion, major anxiety and the psychiatrist told me that Wellbutrin does not cause memory issues, etc. Basically, I dont hold a lot of stock in what all these docs say. These meds are dangerous.
I am withdrawing from Wellbutrin but its probably not as bad as effexor... a lot of people wean off fine. depends on you. for me I have had very very bad anxiety, suicidal thoughts, felt like flu, couldnt sleep. Taking xanax to get through it. What helps is forcing myself to eat what I can (toast, soup), going for a walk when I dont want to.. sleep and the xanax. You may not have any of these symptoms.. this is just my experience. I wish you the best and feel for you.
