Awesome Book

Posted by Alli on January 24, 2001, at 18:47:19

I stumbled across an awesome book at the library last night. The title is, "Your Drug May Be Your Problem"... "How And Why To Stop Taking Psychiatic Medications". The authors are: Peter R. Breggin, M.D. and David Cohen, Ph.D. It will answer many questions! Alli.

I have the book, and in my humble opinion I disagree totally with Peter Breggin. I have read 'Listening to Prozac' by Peter Kramer, and find it very informative. I know that antidepressants may be given out to a lot of people and they have side effects, but they have helped and saved some people while nothing else did. I believe the right med[s] have saved lives in ways we would never know about, i.e. the heart attack that did not happen because of aniety and anger relieved by the right med for that person, etc. This is just my own thoughts. I'm not a Breggin fan, but I respect your opinion.

Not one of my favorites, either.

Sounds like just the sort of title for dedicated med-heads.

DOUBT IT.

IMHO, Breggin has a set opinion about all meds and his agenda is to scare everyone, and that he isn't really open to looking at all the factors involved in making a decision about medication, or information about particular medications. IMHO, he takes data and uses it selectively to promote this agenda.

He probably is doing this because he believes it is the right thing to do, but I think he sensationalizes the issue and I, personally, don't see him or his books as a resource for information because I see him as very biased.

I have not read the book, but my mother did, and her story is very enlightening. She was anxious and depressed for all her life. After 25 years of psychotherapy, valium, and various early antidepressants she found little relief. Then in 1989 Prozac came along and was a miracle for her, completely changed her life. She stayed on it for 10 years with no side effects, but, based on what she read in this book and several other antidrug sources she decided to go off Prozac. No problem for about 5 wks (about the time it takes prozac to clear the system). Then guess what? Her symptoms returned, she felt exactly as she did ten years ago- depressed and anxious, completely miserable. She's now back on Prozac and I have never seen her happier.

Your mother is extremely fortunate the Prozac worked for her the 2nd time around. Often, the AD does not work again once the person comes off it. This is one of the reasons I am so against this type of book. People buy into it, and either don't go for help, or go off their med[s] and can't find the same benefit they had previously. I'm glad your mom is doing well. I am on Prozac also [just over 3 weeks] and am also doing well.
