Intelligence enhancing drugs

Posted by Bryce on January 28, 2001, at 21:48:43

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone out there knew of any substances which could enhance cognitive reasoning. I have to take a very important test in june for law school and was looking for a way to improve my score.

thanks!

Bryce- There's no substitute for really learning the material, and there's a lot of time until June to do that. Another way to give your mind a mental workout, but is fun, is to play a mentally challenging game, such as chess. If you can't find a human opponent, get a chess program and play against the computer. I'm not kidding, it really works.

That being said, I'm somewhat interested in cognative enhancement. I've found that Gingko has helped me maintain focus. It's effects are suble though, don't expect the feeling you'd get from coffee. Speaking of which, I find coffee to enhance my cognitive abilities , and if it didn't mess up my sleep, I'd be at Starbuck's many a day. Piracetam is widely used for cognative and neuroprotective purposes. It is not available in the US, and has to be ordered overseas.

For my university exam, I took Nootropyl (European med.) for memory and Ritalin for concentration. Excellent results, for I had to add something for sleep.

Sigolène.

Hi Bryce; I have to agree with Neal and add:
1]IMHO, I don't think *any* drug can enhance your intelligence but as you know "properly prescribed meds will enhance your concentration", should you have dx.

2] I imagine you're talking bar exam here; before I took my GREs I used Princeton Review and they saved my butt. I can't tell you how much just simple familiarity with the exam format and lots of practice helped me. There must be something similar for your exam, no?
Ditto here on the coffee and Jolt for emergencies.
I've also found that I'm best to study 6am-10 and 3-5pm. I plan around my daily 12-2pm post-lunch coma. Remembering to eat enough protein also helps with energy and focus.

Good luck on the exam!

I agree with Sulpicia.

I bought the Princeton Review book before I took the GRE and did way better than I did on the SAT (for which I did not prepare). If you are taking the June LSAT, you might find their LSAT book helpful. The only thing it lacks is practice tests...you might want to get some more of those. I can't stress enough the importance of preparation. Simply being familiar with the test format and types of questions asked will help. You can be sure that most others taking the test with you will have prepared. Don't be naive like I was with the SAT and assume that you can't really "study" for these tests.

Beyond that, if you do have a disorder that needs treatment, (i.e., depression, ADHD), you should definitely take care of that now. It will make a big difference for you. I'm not sure that you can do much to improve concentration and reasoning in a person with no known disorders.

Nootropil = Piracetam
