Similarity in response to meds among relatives?

Posted by mist on September 22, 2001, at 13:38:38

Is it true that if a particular AD works for a close family member—sibling, etc.—it's more likely to work for you, or that the side effects you experience might be similar?

I would appreciate hearing what anyone knows about this.

It wasn't true for me. Paxil works great for my brother but not for me.

My pdoc has mentioned that there is strong likelihood, and by and large it has been true among family members. I am more familiar tho with what's NOT working being common. .

Good luck,
Zo

My father was on amitriptyline for most of his life. I reacted well to another TCA, nortriptyline. They are close enough. Neither of us reacted well to SSRI's.

My father responded to Wellbutrin, NOTTTT so for me. I do well on SSRI's, but he does not. I've read that there is often a genetic factor to biochemical imbalances, however, beyond this general finding, specific symptoms and responses to meds may very well differ among members of the same family.
