Drugs and Sex

Posted by Mr. Scott on January 27, 2002, at 15:11:20

Something isn't right here...

Increased time to finish is one thing, and I can deal with it, but difficulty getting started is NOT A SIDE-EFFECT I WILL TOLERATE.

Can some of you relay your experiences as to the impact the following drugs have had on your sexual performance?

I'm trying to figure out who is the culprit here.

Provigil/Adrafanil
Klonopin
Effexor

Hi Scott-Don't even have to think about this one, culprit is "efflexor". Klonopin, yea ok maybe if a high dose but "efflexor", sticks-out like a sore-thumb here, no pun intended!!! :) Provigil if anything would be beneficial to your concern, as they say been there done that!!!

I second you on that one alright. I was on (side)Effexor for four years and was sex as well as depression free. Wow! Killing two evil birds with one stone.
I think there should have been a blurb added to the packet saying "Now with 50% more impotence at no added cost!"

Here is my experience and, I admit, it is only one experience, and it might be discrepant with experiences of others.

Klonopin makes it hard for me to get started.
Effexor makes it hard for me to finish.

Its probably either the Effexor or the klonopin. Or both. Probably not the Provigil as Provigil is dopaminergic. I havent had a good sex drive in four years. Currently have zero sex drive...none...zippo...nadda. I forgot what it feels like to have a sex drive so I dont really care anymore.

Drugs Ive been on that brought my sex drive back some included Remeron, Wellbutrin and yes Effexor XR. Amantadine increased sex drive a lot, even though I only stayed on it for about a week.

If you add 15 mg of mirtazapine at bedtime you may be able to alleviate the sexual dysfunction, I'd give it a 50% chance.

One more vote for Effexor here. Effexor practically erased all traces of my libido, and ability to achieve erection, or have sex. It is a quite effective chemical castrator.

Effexor may be bad in this regard, but most effective drugs are the same way. Some of the ones that I've taken that have been disappointing sexually are: all the SSRIs, bar none, at middle to high range therapeutic doses. At the lower doses, some of them allow some poorly compromised function. The serotonergic tricyclics (e.g. Anafranil). MAOIs (especially Nardil). The list goes on and on. Of course this is just my experience. I've also found, in general, that the more effective the drug for me, the more weight gain I get from it.

TSA - What do you base this 50% estimate on? Making an assertion like that without any clarification implies some sort of clinical experience which I know you do not claim to have. - Jane

i can only speak for myself, ssri's have all killed my sex drive and ability to orgasm, serzone killed my drive, but i could do it once i got started if it had been a long time since my last dose. remeron really helped me sexually too, but i could not stand the weight gain. i started wellbutrin150mg/klonopin.5mg 2 days ago, and the first night i had an intense orgasm in my sleep, which was very surprising, so i think the wellbutrin is going to go well in the sex dept. i don't seem to have any of the energy everyone talks about with wellbutrin though, does that side effect take time? i am only on 150mg a day for the first seven days, then 150mg 2x daily. i really need energy, right now i feel kinda lethargic.

Mr. Scott,

I know that EffexorXR made me absolutely numb from the waste down. I cared about having sex but I just could not get it up at all.

Now I'm on Celexa, Wellbutrin, and Klonopin.

The Celexa makes me last longer and can prevent climax. The Wellbutrin makes sex almost a religious experience! WOW! The Klonopin, the pdoc added it a couple of weeks ago, kills some of my sex drive.

Considering all of this I had very satisfying sex last night on my combination. I think I'm getting used to the Klonopin. It is not making me flighty or sleepy anymore. I'm a little bitchy sometimes, yet I have almost zero anxiety.

Good Luck on the Sex and Drugs stuff (Maybe you should add Rock 'n Roll. Tee! Hee! ;-) )

Simcha..

Let's make a clear division: Lack of libido, Impotence, and Anorgasmia (Takes a lot of time or impossible finish).

Impotence is not a very frequent side effect of neither Klonopin nor ADs.

Lowered libido does occur. I have no comparative knowledge about ADs, but Klonopin DOES lower libido, as do other benzodiazepines.

As for anorgasmia and other sexual side effects, SSRIs are the worst, Effexor and Serzone are OK most of the time, and Wellbutrin and Remeron cause no problems.

Remeron is used to relieve AD-induced sexual dysfunction and it does that very well in low doses (7.5-15mg/day). This is a tip from Israel's No.1 Psychopharmacologist (and one of the world leaders in the field), Prof. Avi Weizman.

Jimmy:

For you, Effexor may not have been too bad for anorgasmia, but for me (and I think a few others who posted here) it was quite severe. I can only really speak for myself, and for me it basically erased sexual ability. As for the distinctions you make... yeah, there was some desire to get involved with a woman and have sex, but the chemicals to make the mechanics work were gone.

Simcha,

Sounds like your combo is Rockin & Rollin! Maybe I should give it a try, cause this Effexor induced sexual dysfunction aint going to work.
