Nausea on Wellbutrin

Posted by pedr on January 31, 2002, at 3:34:28

Sorry, yet another wellbutrin thread, I know...

I've been on 150mg Wellbutrin per day for 6 days and every day I'm feeling quite sick with hot and cold flushes and mild headaches. These symptoms start midday-ish and progressively get more intense around 4-5p.m.

Has anyone else experienced something similar or know what this is? B.T.W. I am also taking 12mg reboxetine/day.

Thanks for your time,
pete.

I can't say about the combination therapy you're going through, but I have used timed-release Wellbutrin for quite some time and unless I take it WITH FOOD I can experience anything from dizziness to stomach upset to both to a Niacin-like "rush" which is decidedly unpleasant. Since I am also on other medications to be taken/used with Wellbutrin it's possible that the combination (without enough food to help buffer the side effects) could be contributing to the problem. But I was told outright that it is wisest to take Wellbutrin with a meal. I hope that is what you are doing; if not I hope you will try.

Hmmmm. It says on the pack not to take more than one dose in 8 hours. That rules out taking a pill with lunch and tea. I guess I'll have to start making some breakfast!

Thanks for the tip,
pedros

Hehe...I can't tell you how often I dread eating anymore. It seems the only way I can effectively take all my meds The Way They Should Be Taken is to have five meals a day. I trained at a gym for a while where the trainer specified I should have five meals a day and explained why, metabolically, it's important to spread food intake over a long period of time rather than have "three squares" which is an outdated and (literally) old-fashioned concept in nutrition. When I followed his plan I had five relatively smallish meals during the course of a day (I never went hungry, and had to force myself to eat on occasion, though after a while it became a satisfactory, though high-maintenance regimen). It may not take much food to offset the Wellbutrin's side effects; a continental type breakfast (avoid the caffeine) might be all it takes. Just a thought.

I like the notion of having "tea" in the afternoon, though -- something I hadn't considered as an American (an excuse to have a cake or sweet!).

Hi Pete! I'm also taking Wellbutrin 150 2x a day and am feeling very nauseous. I'm on day 10 and have cut back to 1x a day to see if it helps, it doesn't...Any advice and did your sickness go away with time?? Thanks! Lisa

Hi Lisa, I had pretty much 24/7 nausea for about 2-3 weeks and then it just stopped. I'm *so* glad I gave myself a month for the nausea [and headaches and light-sensitivity] to subside as I'm now the best I've been in over 7 years. It's the only drug I've tried that's consistently lifted my depression. Ok, I still get bad anxiety, bad stomach aches and crash occasionally but it's infinitely better than being really low.
IMHO I'd give it a month before stopping as a lot of people find wellbutrin to be great.
HTH,
pete.
