Insomnia Mystery

Posted by JonW on August 29, 2002, at 13:45:18

Hi all,

I stopped Nardil about 4 weeks or so ago and still continue to have insomnia. I was recently on Geodon but have stopped that, but it continues still. I'm also on moclobemide which can cause insomnia, but last time I was on moclobemide I didn't have this problem. I was on ambien all of the time I was on Nardil. Could this be a rebound effect from not having the ambien? However, when I try ambien now to put me to sleep it doesn't work at 10mg anyway. My pdoc said to try 20mg so that's what I'll try next.

I fall asleep about the time when I would like to wake up in the morning. It's like I'm backwards. I wonder if I could dose the moclobemide once a day and maybe that would help or maybe take that one dose at night instead of the morning. Anyone have any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks,
Jon

Jon,

That's EXACTLY what happens to me when I go through seasonal bipolar depressive cycling during the year. I wake up feeling fairly decent, and then about midday I start getting tired and yawning, and have to struggle to avoid napping. Then later in the evening-when I need to get to sleep-I start to wake up again. Then I either have trouble getting to sleep, or I go to sleep right away and wake up 3 hrs. later. I can't go back to sleep for several hours and then I start to get really drowsy and sleepy RIGHT BEFORE I need to get up. I get up to go to work-and I am drowsy and irritable all day-and the cycle repeats. Any AD's I take-need to be short-acting, so they are clearing my system at bedtime. I think the idea of only taking your moclo first thing in the morning is a good one. Take all of the stimulating/activating meds early in the day (and make them short-acting meds), and let yourself crash at nite so you can sleep.

Dear Jon:

Boy do I understand...I have going throgh that for 2 months now. It has, for me, an insidious onset. First I start to go to sleep 1 hour later, then 2 then 3...until I can only fall asleep at 6:00 a.m. The exact time I would normally rise for work. The consequences need not be explained. On the weekends I go to sleep at 6:00 a.m. and rise at 10:00 a.m. Great! 4 lousy hours. Here's the killer, last weekend I stayed up all day Sat. and Sun. trying to restore the normal cycle. But its smarter than I for as I attempted to go to sleep at 10:00 P.M. Sunday...I didn't get tired until 6:00 a.m. Huh? Well, I didn't get to work that day and here I am again.

I don't have any insight to this problem except to say my cycle returns when it wants to. I don't take the meds si I an unable to comment here. Rather, I just wanted to offer support and let you know that you are not alone.

warmest personal regards,

David PLease excuse any typos...can't focus

Thanks David (nm)
