Getting WELL! To old-timers...

Posted by JonW on September 1, 2002, at 23:05:10

Hello,

I'm sure this has been asked before but I thought I'd run it by everyone again. I've been here for a year or more and the impression you get is that no one really gets "well". People get "well" temporarily or improve their condition to the point that you would call them "better", but not "well". I'm speaking of us treatment resistent folks who have a mixture of depression (usually atypical) and anxiety (maybe GAD or SP) and possibly ADD. Also, not everyone would call these people bipolar, but you wouldn't *not* call them bipolar either. I'm sure you know the profile I'm talking about. Anyway, is there anyone around that actually did it? Or do you know of anyone who used to post here who beat this horrid beast? My sense is that I need to get to the point where things are consistantly "better" and then get more involved in therapy and in life in order to get truly "well". This post is aimed at anyone out there who got "well". First of all, you're my hero :) Secondly, how did you do it? If there is anything anyone (newbie or old-timer) can offer please share. I'm making important decisions about future treatments and this type of info could be very helpful.

Thank You,
Jon

p.s. I wasn't sure what board to post to, sorry... :(

This board is a place for those who do not do well, so it would be a mistake to draw conclusions. Few do seem to get this point,
I guess few also read the FAQ's, ect ! Few
seem to understand what "sample group" and
"distrubution" mean but can site studies galore.

I have Dyspraxia, ADD and major depression and have done well on meds for over 20 years. Sadly,
many feel no need to share info. if they do well. Many seem only motivated to post if things are not well.

Hi to everyone,
I am a first time poster but have lurked around for a couple of years. I have suffered from depression, anxiety, and add since the mid-70's
tons of drug trials, and failures. I have a history of drug abuse and most pdocs were unwilling to treat the add and gad with stimulants and benzos. Needless to say, I was tortured with quite a few combos and on a couple occassions had very serious contemplations of suicide. To make a long story short, I found a pdoc
(thank god) who was willing to help.I have been well for 2 months now and currently on effexor-150, adderall xr 3 x 10 mg, and ativan 2 x .5. Thankyou to all of you. Though you did not know it there were many times this board gave me hope and the courage to continue. Thanks-Steve

Good point oracle. I just thought people who got better might stop by a year later and say it's been a year and things are still fabulous. I hadn't seen any posts like that. I'll be sure to do this when I get better! :)

I think that is true, when people start to feel better they start doing real life stuff and are on these types of boards less. I try to think that when someone dissapears it is because they are having so much fun feeling better that they have no time to come here. I know I definately frequent these boards more when I am feeling down and need support. I do try to answer others posts when I can offer some support. As far as "does anyone get well?", I think they do. I have. It has been 15 long years of struggle but I have finally found the med cocktail that works for me. I "wish" I could consider myself cured but I know know that is more like "managed". Would I trade these disorders (Bipolar and ADD) for a normal life? Any day of the week! I hear others say, "I love being Bipolar and the creativity that comes with it!", CRAZY is what I think! My only advice to others: Be very aggressive in your treatment, find a doctor who is willing to fight to get you better and is supportive, and never give up.
