Informal, unscientific survey- Sexual Side Effects

Posted by Dinah on September 5, 2002, at 10:46:59

I was reading the reported side effects for SSRI's that were included in the posts above with absolute astonishment. Are sexual side effects on SSRI's and Effexor really below 50%? I was thinking they were almost guaranteed.

So could anyone who wishes to respond (including lurkers, please, so as to slightly increase the sample size) please post "Yes, sexual side effects" or "No, no sexual side effects" on SSRI's or Effexor?

I'll start. Yes, sexual side effects. Four years with not a single orgasm on Luvox, and no desire to have one. Inability to have an orgasm from day one on Effexor, with greatly increased desire to have one (hypomania). And I'm a female.

Thanks to anyone who answers. I may have been mistaken about this all this time.

sexual side effects on Prozac
Paxil
for me; also on Celexa dn Zoloft, but I was only on these very short time. I think the sexual side effects run 80+%. Have friends on Effexor and also Prozac and Paxil, and all have these same problems.

If you ask the drug companies, pharmaceutical sales people, or doctors who don't give a rat's behind, the incidence of sexual side effects from SSRI's is low. If you ask SSRI users, especially males, the incidence of sexual side effects is ubiquitous. Remember, the tobacco companies claim tobacco doesn't cause disease, either. And some doctors smoke. Know what I mean ?

I must be the only oddball. But I have found effexor to help me have a higher sex drive, and with a climax. Which was always very low.

Dinah,

Most likely, SSRIs will affect sexual functioning in everyone, dose dependently. However, I think the question is *to what extent*. The effect is probably too subtle for many people to notice. I've been on various SSRIs since I was 18 (I'm 25 now) and I have never *noticed* any difference; perhaps a delay in ejaculation/orgasm, but it's impossible to say.

> So could anyone who wishes to respond (including lurkers, please, so as to slightly increase the sample size) please post "Yes, sexual side effects" or "No, no sexual side effects" on SSRI's or Effexor?

No noticeable sexual side effects. I have been on the following SSRIs at one point: Prozac, Paxil, Celexa, and Effexor.

> I'll start. Yes, sexual side effects. Four years with not a single orgasm on Luvox, and no

Four years???? How were you able to tolerate that?? :-)

> desire to have one. Inability to have an orgasm > from day one on Effexor, with greatly increased > desire to have one (hypomania). And I'm a female.

Sounds pretty damn frustrating... Have you tried (or considered) augmenting the SSRI/Effexor with a dopaminergic agent or other drugs which have exhibited efficacy in counteracting the sexual effects from SSRIs?

Hope you come up with a remedy for your side-effects!

Best of luck,
Dave

No, I don't you're an "oddball." Keep in mind that patients whom experience sexual side-effects are going to be much louder than their side-effect free counterparts: Would you report a side-effect which you *didn't* experience? ;-) And with all the talk about sexual side-effects and SSRIs, I would expect a rather high incidence of a sexual "placebo" effect. This is not to say that what many experience are not real; I'm just trying to be as objective as possible when putting this in perspective.

I wish I could feel like this for the rest of my life.

Thank you E LILLY & Co!!

Well, I guess the good part was that it also took away my desire, so I didn't think about it until I discontinued the Luvox.

Thanks Dave. I did away with my side effects by doing away with my SSRI, and just using Depakote and Klonopin. I think I wouldn't want to go back on one unless I was feeling sooo bad that sexual side effects would be the least of my problems.

My main reason for asking was that I was astonished at the low numbers cited on a previous thread. When people ask me questions about what they can expect from an SSRI, I include sexual side effects without thinking that much about it (But always add that everyone is different). If the numbers were as low as stated, I would change the way I present that information.

Hi Roo thanks for asking (: I am on 30mg. of remeron and sleep great can still have sex with and without someone...I also take Clonazepam 0.5mg through the day and I find that I don't really need to take it as much as i was earlier this week ..last week I was taking clorazepam .5mg 6 times a day, today I took one at 9am and will try to only take one at bedtime with the 30mg's of remeron ..I am really feeling great ..I'm going back to work next week 7 to 3 Government job and start a part time job delivering on the 16th of Sept ..I don't care about what my ex is doing and I am just really happy about landing this part time job from 4 till 9 or 10 a couple nights a week under the table money..$80 to $150 a night and I landed the job yesterday ..Sold my self to my new boss in 5 minutes ..so that is something ...considering I was timimg the trains 2 weeks ago running by my work..

There have been no increases yet anyways , I am eating 3 times a day .I have gained some weight ,but eating alot because I hardly ate for 2 months. My feet look swollen , dont know why that is I spend about 14 hrs a day on the computer. I do notice that I am dreaming a bit more and the dreams seem to last longer than normal, and I remember them..and they are not nightmares either. Stuff from the past though..kinda neat dreaming like this. There has been no shocks coming off the 11 days I used effexor XR ..Anything else I will let you know ..if you have any more questions anykind be my guest and ask away ..Im here till Monday morning..Care to tell me whay part of the world you live in???(^: Robin D J

Hello Dinah,

Glad you are taking the initiative. I am on prozac for the past couple of years and my desire phase is left for good. (Dosage is 40 mg a day). I am engaging in sexual activity like a robot. Without true desire. Erection and ejaculation, both are not affected. But a sexual activity in the abscence of desire is nothing but a nonsense. Orgasm is not intense as it was before, as most of the times I realise the incidence (of ejaculation) when my erection subsides. It is a very funny medicine.
I had similar experience with zoloft also. But zoloft is a little more potent. It deprieved me from sex and I can't remember a single orgasm while I was on it.

So good luck guys. Those who want to follow my steps are welcome. You have nothing to lose but your sexuality. Long live SSRIs!! Long live newer ADs similar to these!! Let the physicins prescribe them more fluently and keep antibenzo propaganda alive. Because off patent benzos don't benefit pharmaceutical companies. And I am sure phrmaceutical giants will be looking forward to form a new pill that will reverse the sexual side effects of SSRIs and similar ADs. Will it not be a great achievement? Be ready to hail!!
HIBA

I TAKE 150MG OF EFFEXOR XR PER DAY AND I HAD AND HAVE NO SEXUAL DESIRES OR SEXUAL SENSITIVITY AT ALL. ITS VANISHED. A LOT OF MEDS ARE INEFFECTIVE ON ME AND I AM ALSO VERY SENSATIVE TO MEDS SO I DONT WANT TO TRY WELBUTRIAN. I TOOK LITIUM FOR ABOUT 6 YEARS, AND AFTER GOING TOXIC SEVERAL TIMES AND FEELING SIDE EFFECTS MORE FEQUENTLY, I SWITCHED TO EFFEXOR WHILE IN A DEPRESSION FROM STOPPING MEDS, AND ITS WORKED AND NOT PUT ME INTO MANIA, WHICH I MAINLY WAS WITHOUT LITHIUM.
- BACK TO MY ORIGINAL QUESTION, ARE THERE ANY OTHER OPTIONS, OR HAVE I TURNED INTO A BORN AGAIN VIRGIN AGAINST MY WILL?
THERE IS VIAGARA FOR MEN, IS THERE ANYTHING FOR WOMEN? AND DO I HAVE TO GO TO THAT EXTREME? IM NOT SEXUALLY DISFUNCTIONAL, I HAVE A SIDE EFFECT FROM A DRUG.
ANY SUGGESTIONS OR COMMENTS?
