SSRIs basically increase serotonin levels. Trycyclics do too but less specifically. Trycyclics have more side-effects so SSRIs are usually given first, but if SSRIs fail to work a trycyclic might be used instead or added to the SSRI.

Some tryclics are very sedative. Amitryptyline is very sedative for example. Some have anticholineric effects which can make one foggy. Perhaps another tryclic might help. You should say what specific drugs you on when you ask for med help. It matters.

Perhaps a small dosage of an antipsychotic might help at this point

You are probably NOT going psychotic. I try to explain depression and anxiety as almost the opposite of psychosis--you are almost too sane and aware of what is going on, you overanalyze and over-observe that it causes you too worry about things that are not deserving of your stress--you can't just "go with the flow."

Anyway, I would hold off on anti-psychotics. Though they do help some who are depressed and anxious, there are plenty of risks associated with them that are not associated with traditional anti-depressants. You sound like a good candidate for an MAOI (Nardil, Parnate, Marplan)--there are countless people on these boards who have little or no response to ssris and tricyclics who experience a full remission on these drugs. Just be prepared for diet restrictions and a two week washout period. This is just my opinion, I am sure others will disagree.

i panick enough as it is, there would be no way i want to go on an one of them, i worry that i may be given seratone syndrome with the amount of drugs i have had and also they can cause you brain damage.. i think i need something that will reverse the affects.. of an ssri that i blame for this which is effexor.. ever since i had it for mild depression i have suffered with this state for 3 years and now i am terrified that maybe i may get phsyicosis or something , as all sorts are going through my head and i cant control them alone with just therapy..

Trazodone is very sedating and made me foggy. I think you must make an appointment to see your psychiatrist as soon as possible. Tell them about the foggieness. Tell them about the anxiety. Prothiaden is good for anxiety but also very sedating and can also make one foggy. Write out what is bothering you so you can be sure you tell your psychiatrist what is bothering you.

How long have you been on these drugs? If it is less than a month the drugs may still need time to kick in.

Don't worry about becoming psychotic. If that were happening, you would not be worrying about it, as psychotics are not aware of their illness.

You should go to your doctor ASAP, and say how you feel, I have felt like this before with anxiety, racing thoughts and irrational fear so bad I thought I would just go mad! I got prescribed a benzo which helped short term. If you can just stick it out then your meds should start working soon.
