strattera, depression, sexual side effects

Posted by DissTired on February 26, 2003, at 15:33:32

Is there any news on whether strattera might work for depression (as reboxetine is supposed to do) as well as ADD?

Also, why would a norepinephrine inhibitor cause sexual side-effects? I thought that serotonin was responsible for most antidepressant sexual side-effects.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Yes, Strattera should most definitely help with depression. Reboxetine, which works in the same way, is used primarily as an antidepressant in Europe where it is prescribed.

As for sexual side effects....I was not aware that there were any significant ones with Strattera.

Yes, I was surprised to hear about the sexual side-effects. Here is the table from a web site.
(http://www.healthyplace.com/medications/strattera_2.htm#table_4):

STRATTERA vs Placebo (first two for males only) Placebo
Erectile disturbance 7% v 1%
Impotence 3% v 0%
Orgasm abnormal 2% v 1%

The web site also says that this is probably underreported, as it usually is.

I have been taking Strattera for a month now. I am a 33 year old woman. The only change I have noticed sexually is that my orgasms aren't as deep or intense as before. Yet I am still able to be stimulated and achieve an orgasm. I have also taken Prozac for years and never had any sexual side-effects. I am hoping over time that my body will adjust and my orgasms will get back to their normal intensity with taking the Strattera. The benefits I receive from the Strattera have been so great that I am willing to be patient with this one.
