Yohimbine and OCD

Posted by yeltom on April 9, 2003, at 13:21:27

I am taking yohimbine daily to combat the sexual side effects caused by 60 mg of prozac. I know that it has the potential to cause anxiety in general, but I am suspicious that it has worsened my obsessiveness in particular (even at the ridiculously low dose of 2.7 mg/day). I can't find much about this possibility on the Internet (in fact there seems to be some evidence that yohimbine increases the effectiveness of SSRIs), so I'm wondering if anyone has had this experience or if anyone could theorize about whether this is pharmacologically plausible. Thank you

I definitely think that is possible. I would look into other sexual enhancers...

Could you elaborate, both in terms of what makes you think that is possible and what other sexual enhancers work. (Are you male of female? I assume the latter) There are so many herbs marketed for sexual enhancement, but I have little faith that they work to reduce antidepressant-induced sexual side effects.

I'm female, as you correctly guessed. I have tried yohimbe as has my boyfriend. Yohimbe/yohimbine (the latter is the active ingredient in the yohimbe plant) does increase blood flow to the pelvic region and is a mild stimulant, thus why it should theorectically help problems of arousal and erection. I do know two people (both male) who have found that yohimbe works for them -- but that's it. Like I said before my bf and I had no response at all, other than feeling mildly stimulated (caffeine like feeling). Neither of us where taking other medications at the time, either.

I've been trying for a while to seek out natural sex enhancers for my bf because he has a very low libido (has his whole life, it's not related to medication, but we now suspect it is ralated to depression/dysthymia). We tried the yohimbe, we tried this stuff called 'KONG' (www.keepitupwithkong.com), and neither did anything. For the past two and half weeks he has been taking TRIBULUS TERRESTIS root (4000 mg/day)...it has had no appreciable effects -- except that recently he seems to have had better lasting ability. It hasn't changed his libido or orgasms at all though.

We have both also tried bromocriptine (a dopamine agonist) to asses its sexual effects -- which were ZIP (I am convinced that dopamine agonists suck for sexual purposes) -- and we both had absotley awful headaches and felt sick to death for two days.

I've really begun to get fed up with the herbs at this point. They don't seem very strong and certainly not strong enough to counteract synthetic pharmaceuticals. I have heard about an herb that is supposed to be 70% as effective as viagra in erectile effects, but I can't find the damn herb anywhere -- a google search turns up 2 pages, 95% of it in other languages -- and NONE of the sites selling the stuff! Frustrating...

So, that's what I know, hope it helped.

Take care,
Julia

Thanks, but what is the name of this herb that you can't find? Have you tried high doses of ginkgo?

The herb goes by some zulu name...I can't even remember it now, it is long and unpronouncable. I've given up finding it.

I tried high doses of gingko, as did he...nothing. :-/
