I'm gonna ask my pdoc for a script for darvocet

Posted by jerrympls on December 10, 2003, at 1:06:03

And why shouldn't I? I've been on EVERY medication for depression - some MANY times. Sometimes I get a partial response and mostly - over the past 12 years - NO respons. I have ECT = failure VNS = failure and too many drug cocktails to remember. I'm now being taken off of the 120mg of NARDIL because of it's failure and am left with Klonopin, Seroquel and Ambien - all mostly for sleep.

It's the Holidays and why can't I be on an opiate? I'm at a Big Ten research University and have had a pdoc tell me that they sometimes DO use opiates for treatment resistant depression. So - my first question is - how many more years does it take of medication failure to convince them that meds like Darvocet and Vicodin do WONDERS for my mood with NO TOLERANCE and NO WITHDRAWL. I was on Vicodin every 6 hours for almost 2 months for a medical procedure and then stopped cold and had NO - ABSOLUTELY NO withdrawl or negative effects.

Darvocet makes me more outgoing, eases my anxiety and helps me sleep WONDERFULLY. Vicodin does the same.

So, I'm going to ask for a script while I'm going off the Nardil. They've told me that tey DO use it for TRD. I fit ALL qualifications. AND - how addictive is Darvocet compared to Klonopin? Ambien? Stimulants? LESS addictive.

So - I'll keep you all updated. This Friday I see my doc. It's time I demand to feel better. 12 years of horror isn't enough?

Thanks for listening to my rant......

Jerry

Good luck! If the doc won't comply, try a different pdoc.

I'm not sure how I feel about opioids for depression. I have been on almost every type of pain killer sometime during my life, YES, I do admit, they make me feel good. I have often wondered why we can't feel like that all the time. I was recently on darvocet for about 2 weeks and I found the stopping hard, withdrawals, back to not feeling europhoric, which in turn makes my depression worse. Another thing about drugs like hydrocodone (another favorite) is the atcetomediphine (spelling?) and your liver. Of course I'm not too sure of the effect of my effexor and my liver??? Well I'm babbleling, just had a thought on the subject. Lots of Luck to all.

Acetaminophen etc. » ronn

If you're concerned about liver damage from acetaminophen (I think I spelled that correctly), some of these opioid painkillers have versions with ibuprofen etc. instead, which isn't as hard on the liver.

I happen to be allergic to (or at least get a rash from) acetaminophen (Tylenol etc.). It's weird, since I don't have other allergies. Anyway, when I've needed painkillers from dentists etc. I always insist on Vicoprofen (hydrocodone + ibuprofen) instead of Vicodin (hydrocodone + acetaminophen). Darvocet is Darvon + acetaminophen, but there's also Darvon alone, and I think Darvon with other anti-inflammatories (I've never actually tried any form of Darvon).

One tipoff to presence of acetaminophen is a drug name ending in "cet". If you're concerned about acetaminophen, you should ask the prescriber whether there's an alternative without it, since there sometimes is.

Now all non steroid pain killers have been found to cause liver problems if taken to excess. All now carry a warning about taking with booze.

Yes, but my understanding is that acetaminophen is by far the worst (and maybe Toradol too).

I may be wrong here, but I thought the issue with ibuprofen or aspirin + alcohol had more to do with damage to the stomach lining. I haven't researched this much though, so I'm hardly an expert.

How long are you planning on taking them? As you continue to use them your body will grow immune and you will have to increase the dosage. Have you tried mood stabilizers in place of ADs? Sometimes they work... Just a suggestion..
