REMISSION of depression through AD's

Posted by BennyJ on March 25, 2004, at 23:20:36

Hey All,

I've been on effexor xr for a few months now and finally starting to stabilize. I'd like to hear from people who have had success in remission after a med is stopped, my ideal goal for putting myself through this AD crap. How long did you experience remission after you stopped taking a med, what dosages you were at and length of time spent on a med and if the depression came back was that due to some life stress trigger or not.

keep smilin,
Ben

I'm sorry but I've never had true remission from depression once I stopped taking AD's. As the last dosage's effects left my body, the familiar feelings of sadness and dispair took residence in my mind again.

I believe the key is in learning better ways to cope.

Hey Ben!

I had a short remission after going off all of my medication. I forget exactly what I was on, but it was a couple of SSRI's, Clonazepam, I think 4mgs a day. I went off cold turkey which was really stupid. And PAINFUL! I imagin somewhat like coming off any type of drugs?? However after that few daze!! My mind was clear as it had ever been in the 4 years of medication, I felt Normal!! But after about a month and a half, I spiraled right back into proably the worst depressive episode of my lifetime, and it took, months to get me out of the hell. Really wasn't worth it for me. I think if you do it, it should be supervised by your doc. Sorry it wasn't a more uplifting story. I really hoped I was cured.

The immediate well-being after antideperessant withdrawal is very common for me. But it has never lasted, I must say. I think that you feel very good once that you quit antidepressants because the good effects last for a while without the bad side-effects.

I think, but this is just a personal opinion, that the only kind of people who have complete remission are the one who didn't need to take antidepressants, the people who are balanced for a consistent portion of their life and then experience a depressive episode due to some stressful event. The *sane* people, I mean.

I don't in which category you fall but I wish you good luck. And beware of Effexor withdrawal if you decide do quit, it's known to be one of the worst, so you may want to consult you physician and educate yourself about it.
