NEURONTIN FOR ANXIETY? ANY EXPERIENCES?

Posted by krybrahaha on March 24, 2004, at 20:12:05

I have tried many different meds for my GAD, my p-doc is now suggesting Neurontin. Anyone out there use or have used Neurontin successfully for anxiety?

Hello,
Sorry I can't say anything good about that one. It did initially dampen some of my anxiety, but I just didn't find the increasing multiple doses per day worth the trouble. I think this drug is over-rated. Klonopin is a good way to go if you have no problem with a benzodiazepine (controlled substance, sedating at times). Good luck.

I like Neurontin. I find it can take the edge off both anxiety and depression, but in a short term as needed kind of way. Not sure it would make much of a dent in a high-anxiety individual, though. Probably more useful as an add-on. Anyway it will let you know right away whether its helpful or not.

When I started taking Neurontin, it clearly helped my anxiety (social anxiety w. panic attacks), but after about 8 mos. I realized it was no longer helping.

My psychopharmacologist thinks it helps keep me stable, otherwise I would just stop it.

Hope this is helpful.

I found Neurontin tremendously relaxing for about 2-3 days, then it did absolutely nothing. I continued to take it for about a year and then quit, because (for me) it was useless at any dose. Others seem to have a sustained effect, though. My pdoc is willing to prescribe it, but although he was enthusiastic at first now says it's simply a placebo.

I do believe that it can work for some people, and it's extremely safe. So, just try it and see how it works for you.

Neurontin did some very strange things to my mind--it made me near-psychotic. Plus does anyone remember the scandal of neurontin being pushed for things is has no effect on, such as bipolar, and the falsified studies?

by the way--is Gabitril the same or similar to neurontin?

thanks

I tried Gabatril for a short while and it just made me sleepy (in fact, it's starting to be used as a sleep med). But it does seem to be good for certain people, and my pdoc says that some of his colleagues have had excellent results with it for anxiety treatment.

I was prescribed Neurontin for facial pain last summer--a relatively low dose 900 mg/d. It didn't do much for the pain, so I tried taking more(per MD's instructions). At about 3000 mg/d (3.0 g/d!) I noticed some calming effects. But like someone in this thread said, mutiple dosing is a pain.

A couple of other comments about this drug. I think it's cleared unchanged from your system in a few hours (hence the mutiple dosing). It's very expensive, so you'd better have good insurance. Finally, nobody seems to have a clue how it works. Receptor-binding studies have demonstrated it doesn't bind to the normal receptors one would look at for this type of drug. It may, at high dose, have some efficacy for bezodiazepine withdrawal, although I think that one's still up in the air.

Keep in mind though, I'm one data point--which proves nothing other than I doesn't seem to be too useful to me. I may be worth a try for you.

Caleb
