Betablocker and performance anxiety

Posted by sdb on May 12, 2004, at 18:45:55

I have taken Visken (pindolol) and Concor (bisoprolol) and Nebilet (nebivolol) for performance anxiety. Visken had a good effect and it blocked heart-racing and trembling. But Visken had to many sideeffects like ed and bad sleep.

Concor did not help for heart-racing (although it's a beta1-blocker!)and trembling, but no sideeffects.

Nebilet (beta1-blocker) also did not work.

I was estonished that beta1-blocker reduce heart-racing during performance. Perhaps they need a longer onset (I only have taken it 3 days before performance)

Anybody has experience with betablockers during performance? (efficacy, sideffects,...)

I am a prof musician and use 10 mg. propanolol before performances. Take 1 hour before the performance. It will begin working at about an hour and peak in about 1½ hours. Leaves your system in something like 4 hours. It stops the shakes, but will leave you feeling slightly detached.

I've taken 20-40mg of propranolol for performance anxiety (eg job interviews) and also found it to be effective. I'd say you have to take it at least 90 minutes before the performance. I'd second the "detached", but sometimes that's a good thing.

cheers,
kem

(BTW it's absolutely no good if the required performance is sexual :?)
