Taking a poll: what is best med for anxiety?

Posted by Somaticide on June 4, 2004, at 20:15:32

I'm taking a poll to see what everyone thinks is the best drug they have tried for anxiety. Let me know what has worked for you. Thanks!

10 mg Zyprexa does the job. I felt best with clonazepam, but it stopped working after a few weeks. Some people don't develop tolerance with the benzo...it depends on the individual.

Any (non hypnotic) benzodiazepine will do the job, But it's only a short term solution. You can numb your central nervous system for years and still have the underlying issues that are the cause of your anxiety. All benzos will do is numb you, just like alcohol. It's best you stay away from drugs like Xanax and talk your problems out of your system. As I'm now dependent on bromazepam I know what I'm talking about.
Stay away from the benzos and see a therapist.

Good luck.

klonopin makes me more depressed. Xanax scares me for the addiction reputation. Anything else?

Clonazepam is great, but may have possibly made me more depressed. YMMV. Xanax is good. A drawback is that it is short acting. On the plus side, it takes effect fairly quickly and I find that it's not overly sedating if taken in the right dose. I like the general lack of side effects with the benzos. Neruontin was also very helpful.

Thanks for your reply. Are you really a chemist? You see, Xanax has been working well for me but I am worried about addiction. Amazingly enough, Xanax is the only thing that has worked to make my urinary/vulvar burning go away.

I am currently taking 1 mg twice a day and 2 mg at bedtime. What is the max amount a person can take and for how long? Will it eventually loose its effectiveness?

I would apreciate any knowlege you have. Thaks so much!

Klonopin (clonazepam) is the "gold standard" for serious anxiety disorders, and many people take the same dose for years with no need to increase (like me and many of my pdoc's other patients). Discontinuation does require a slow taper, as with most antidepressants etc., but it has littIe reputation for addiction or abuse. I don't find it the slightest bit "numbing" or disorienting, beyond the initial adjustment phase of a week or two (and many other users here have reported the same result). In fact, I don't feel it at all, other than the huge reduction in anxiety. It has very long-lasting effects, which allows dosing (for me and lots of other people) once a day.

I have to say, though, that Xanax (alprazolam) is tops for very rapid anxiety relief (for me, anyway), and I always keep some on hand for especially stressful situations. However, if I use it often at all I develop tolerance. This isn't a problem -- it just means that I greatly limit its use, which is probably just as well. Since it has a fairly brief duration of effect, it has greater potential for dependency/dosage increase than most other anxiolytics. Also, some people find it euphoria-inducing, so many doctors refuse to prescribe it.

I have used Neurontin and it worked well for a couple of days, then completely stopped doing anything. It does seem to work well for others, though. SSRIs like Prozac and Zoloft make me extremely agitated, even after long-term use, and I now avoid them. They do help for some people though.

neurontin was the best for me defintely. start low and raise your dose slowly or youll get tolerance quickly.

hey chemist, if you are there, i found neurontin's bioavailbilty is increased 12-15% by taking naproxen sodium (Aleve) along with it. Odd, eh? It does work though! I also tried sublinguil(SP?), it also works quicker, and better, but tastes bad, also i tried mixing DMSO on my arm, then adding the powder and rubbing it in good, this worked a bit too. i think my best bet is to dissolve the neurontin powder into the DMSO so its fully dissolved, then use a dropper and apply near blood vessels, essentially, making a neurontin injection :-) havent tried the calcium idea yet, but its on my things to do list, for neurontin :-)

so yes i rec neurontin! also great for depression and muscle/neuropathic pains.

Hi to all,

I have tried almost all benzos, antideps, mood stabilizers and antipsychotics. Rivotril(Klonopin) was great. Xanax made me euphoric, valium made me numb. Antideps are not great for anxiety except tryptizol (Amitriptyline), but a mouth like sand is not much fun.
After all, what really worked for me without making me numb or euphoric, left my emotions untouched is SULPIRIDE at low doses. It was the pure anxioysis. Not even a combination of 2mg Xanax plus 100mg amitriptyline did the same job.I take t 150mg daily, though I am much concerned of it's availability now. Somewhere I heard it is being taken away from European markets. Alas!
PLS

I get some anxiolytic effect from Effexor & Remeron, but Anxiety isn't a major problem for me. I'm not fond of Benzos as they lower my carefactor to zero.

Amitriptyline or Clomipramine might be good for your pain & anxiety.

Cheers,
Panda.

Nardil, - by about 10 lengths.
For anxiety/social phobia if the drugs the docs get the kickbacks from don't work.

Its a toss up between xanax and Klonopin. I currently prefer Klonopin. I also take Gabatril. So far so good. Actually, the Gabatil was a little activating for me in the begining. But that subsided. I ALWAYS seem to have the opposite reaction to a med than Im supposed to.

I experienced the WORST anxiety while on Effexor.
My tummy is starting to hurt. I get anxious just thinking about that med (Effexor XR)
