Lamictal: Split doses, or all at once?????????????

Posted by qbsbrown on March 9, 2005, at 12:36:09

Hey guys, i was just wondering what others were doing. I've heard both, and my doc has me splitting them.
Are there pros or cons to either. I would assume take it all in the morn, if it causes insomnia. On the other hand, it can have me waking up at extremely early hours. Just trying to get a feel when the best time is.

Regards,

Brian

i take lamictal too. my pdoc wants me to just take it at night because it causes sleepyness. So, i dont know where you heard it could cause isomnia. But maybe in different ppl it reacts differently. but for me, i have to take it at bedtime......

Yes, lamictal can be activating, hence it's antidepressant properties. From a bipolar site, it seems that it's about a 50/50 split of people taking it day or night.
I've taken it at night, and stayed up til 5-6 am w/o being tired at all.
Guess it's all different for every individual.

I'm on 200mg of Lamictal right now, and I originally took it all in the morning. Despite the long 33 hour half-life, when it was taken once a day, I wasn't getting optimal relief, and my mood would seem to drop close to the next dose. When I got up to 200mg in the morning, I felt a little more tired. Now, I've split the dose to 100mg 2xday, and it seems to be working in a more consistent way and providing better coverage for depression around the clock. So far, I have no side effects from Lamictal.

I think I metabolize meds a bit faster than average because I seem to need to take meds more times a day than the average person. I had the same with Lexapro (which has a long half-life). Once a day dosing all in the morning (even at the max dose) didn't provide coverage for depression relief for the whole day, and I would start swinging downward when nighttime came. I would have been better off with twice a day dosing for Lexapro.
