Anyone else on two different AP's?

Posted by whoami on June 7, 2005, at 20:14:37

I was supposed to be switching from Geodon to Abilify. Halfway between, the doc said to just take both. I've found that they seem to give each other an extra kick (each is more "powerful"). I take 15 mg. Abilify in the morning with 300 mg Effexor, and 60 mg Geodon at night. How common is it to prescribe an AP combo?

It is not unusual.

I take two AP's and have done for quite some time.

The BNF says this on the subject:
"Prescribing of more than one antipsychotic at the same time is not recommended; it may constitute a hazard and there is no significant evidence that side-effects are minimised."

I find taking a medium to low dose of two typical antipsychotics a far better treatment than monotherapy with an atypical. But probably Im in a minority.
