Vistaril - will it help with allergy symptoms?

Posted by ClearSkies on March 23, 2006, at 10:37:03

My anxiety is back, although at a much lower intensity than a year ago. I'm off of xanax, but find no discernible relief from Lamictal (200mg). I'm trying Vistaril again. It didn't work for my acute anxiety, but I hope it helps with this constant low frequency nasty feeling.

Since it's an antihistamine, can I expect it to help with seasonal allergy symptoms? I'd love to stop taking one of my pills (Claritin) if the Vistaril will do double duty.

Thanks

Don't take pseudofed. The last time I took it years ago for a really bad cold. It made me so anxious I couldn't stand it never again. And I didn't have anxiety then either. Love Phillipa

Sudafed, pseudoephedrine, is a decongestant and not an antihistamine.

It depends on how it acts with the individual and what other things they're taking. I can understand and I know you are medication sensitive to some things.

It makes me somewhat anxious and temporarily increases my symptoms but for nasty sinus tract infections and blockages it is really the only thing out there that works -- at all. Frankly it only works partially.

And then there's the stupid Sudafed PE for OTC so you dont have to ask pretty please can I have the partially working real stuff because I'm not a crystal methhead, which I won't touch because from what I hear it doesn't work at all.

Atarax (hydroxyzine), dating from 1957, will sedate one like Benadryl although nearly not quite as strong I think. It is a piperazine, similar to Meclizine, an OTC anti-emetic (Dramamine II) and also in the same drug class as Viagra.

When it is metabolized in the body it becomes the now non-drowsy marketed prescription cetirizine (Zyrtec).
