Less depressed OFF Prozac

Posted by Maxime on March 27, 2006, at 15:53:04

I stopped taking Prozac last week (80mg) in preparation for starting my Parnate. I swear I am less depressed. Is this possible? I won't be starting the Parnate until next week, maybe later. I am addicted to ephedra and need to be clean of that before I start the Parnate. I am also coming off Trileptal.

Good thing I spent all that time in the hospital to put things back exactly as they were!!!

> I stopped taking Prozac last week (80mg)

I am not sure if enough of 80 mg/daily of Prozac is out of your system in just a week to judge whether your feeling better is a long-term effect of Prozac withdrawal. It has such a long half-life (9 days?) that it seems from 3 to 6 weeks in necessary to gauge how you are faring in withdrawal.

> I swear I am less depressed. Is this possible?

I do think it possible that you could be less depressed off Prozac, especially when it reaches its threshold of effectiveness. After I was on it for a year, so many of the bad side effects became really harsh: daytime sleepiness, lethargy, a sustained low level depression, weight gain, haziness, etc.

I am in the process of a slow withdrawal now. I recently dropped from 7.5 mgs to 5 mgs after 4-6 good weeks on 7.5 mgs and my first days at 5 are only ok. Slight return of some sypmtoms of depression. Let's hope they subside like they did after 2-3 weeks at 7.5 mgs. But indeed, at 7.5 mgs (augmented with fish oil), I was less depressed than at higher doses (15-20 mgs) of Prozac alone.

Maxime,

I think it is definitely possible! I've been on 80 mg Prozac and it made me lethargic and depressed and increased my headaches. Glad to see you are at least a little bit better!

Hugs,
MB

Happened to me too. I was actually more depressed when I was on a higher dose of prozac, and I have responded pretty well to other SSRI's. Apparently this happens to some folks w/ prozac.

I have felt better after getting off most ADs I was on including Prozac. Depression came ripping back though after a few weeks. It might be slightly psychological, "I feel ok and I'm not on a med!". Also the lack of side effects will make you feel better too.

Yes, I suspect everyone is right. Just the fact that I am not on in could be less depressing. But I am also tapering Trileptal so it could be that as well. All I know is that for the past few I haven't as depressed and I haven't felt as suicidal. It's still all there though. Yay me!

Prozac MADE me suicidal where I never had been in my life before taking it... In me it induced a mixed state... So, from my experience Yes you might definitely be feeling better off of it...(it does take I think six weeks or so for it to be out of your system...) Hang in there! DP

I swear the same thing happened to me when I went off Prozac 6 mos. ago. I actually felt better..less depressed, more social, it was weird! I know one thing for sure, I'll never take Prozac again.

Hi Tyler
What's strange is that I was on Prozac for almost 3 years before I started Parnate and it didn't do that to me. At least I can stop Parnate cold turkey because of the long half life. Soon I will be back on Parnate.

Good, I hope it works great for you. As you probably already know I'm a big Parnate fan. It has literally changed my life from lousy to very good in the past 2 mos. Hope it does the same for you. :)

I am a big fan as well since Parnate is the ONLY med that has rid me of depression. But then I added Trileptal (or my pdoc did) and it stopped working for me. Leading to a deep depression, a suicide attempt and 2 months in a psych hospital.

I'm happy you are doing so well on Parnate!

Wow...Hospitals suck don't they. I was in one for approx. 2 mos also back in 1997 with severe depression. But, I guess it saved my life so I guess it wasn't that bad. :)
I bet this time you're going to do great on Parnate...I sure hope so.

Tyler
