Soma for anxiety/tension/etc. ?

Posted by med_empowered on November 6, 2006, at 21:49:39

OK..another off-label question.

Soma is partially metabolized into meprobamate, the infamous "Miltown". Miltown probably isn't nearly as addictive as people tend to think--its still only a schedule IV, and its good for headaches (Equagesic, for instance). Anyway...

has anyone found Soma itself helpful for anxiety? Compared to benzos and/or ADs, how helpful (or unhelpful) was it?

Thanks

Soma is a racemic mixture of compounds and is basically metabolized into Miltown, as you have noted. Miltown is a carbamate, however it has cross-tolerance with barbiturates and its therapeutic to danger window lies between the barbiturates and benzodiazepines.

Miltown is more habituating than benzodiazepines and is a leftover of the dustbin of odd non narcotic sedatives like the discontinued Placidyl.

I've found the smallest amounts of Soma wonderful for head and spinal spasms and as a side benefit anxiety; however I can't take it these days because I also am prescribed benzodiazepines and other substances. The combination is particularly impairing apparently in my doctors' wisdom.

Soma I would imagine it would have some use for anxiety; it is a frequently diverted drug when it was available easily in [a certain country] and therefore consequently I don't think a doctor would want to prescribe it off label, but rather prescribe the original Miltown itself in a smaller dose if at all, for anxiety to keep their practice and license proper.

When I was 23 and the first panic attacks a combo of Miltown 450 and valium l5mg made me feel well. Took care of my three kids did all I had to do. I stopped Miltown coldturkey no side effects. The truth Love Phillipa

here's the thing: a) a lot of docs around here are kind of benzo-phobic, which sucks for me b/c benzos work well for me, and I dont want to be on something for too long, anyway.

Also..alot of my anxiety expresses itself as physical tension, so I feel like a muscle relaxer/sedative combo could be quite helpful, but I'm not entirely sure.

Hi Med

I've read that meprobamate is less effective for anxiety than the benzos.

Yes. It was prescribed when I had back spasms, at which time I renamed it "coma"...in about 30 minutes, Mr. Sandman would come take me away...

To be honest, I think meprobamate is better as a hypnotic than as an anxiolytic.

I went to my GP recently bc I've had a ton of anxiety due to some custody issues and other things. Well she was no help at all, and only offered me wellbutrin even though I wasn't depressed just sick with worry. Well the wellbutrin made it worse the first week or two, but when things got really too uncomfortable i would take one or maybe one and half of my hubbys soma and it would totally calm me down. Just my 2 cents. And really not tired, just not crawling out of my skin.
