Social phobia/ panic

Posted by Jimmyboy on February 17, 2007, at 12:37:54

Well as sson as I got the actual depression taken care of, I have strted to have smaal amounts of social phobia/ avoidance and what feels like panic attacks. Which, by the way, have to be the worst symptom you could possibly have, I absolutely hate that..

Anyone have any suggestions for that ? I have Klonopin, maybe I should just take that? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Jim

Jim,

I have the same problem. I am steady on an AD (lamictal) for Bipolar. I take 2mg of klonopin during the day. But I am getting panic attacks. I dont know which is worse mania, or panic attacks. Which AD are you on?

My panic disorder finally resolved its self some how . But for me xanax was the only drug that truly halted a serious panic attack. Klonopin wouldnt hurt but maybe something more short term for the panic is more appropriate.

I am taking Lithium , Tianeptine and Adrafinil..

I am probably going to phase out the adrafanil, my fatigue has pretty much gotten better so I don't think its necessary and it certainly doesn't help with the anxiety.

Can anyone tell me about Valium. How is it in comparison to other benzo's : strength, how long it takes to work, how long it lasts, subjective differences between it and others..

Thanks,

JB

The potency of Valium is about 1/10th that of Xanax and Klonopin, i.e; 10mg Valium ~equal to 0.5mg Xanax/Klonopin. You can feel the effects of Valium within an hour and it has a half-life of up to 200 hours. Needless to say you can take it once daily, usually at night to help sleep. Valium is often said to be more sedating than other commonly used benzos like Ativan and Xanax, which are more anxiolytic. I took it for a while and liked it.

Jimmyboy I did take ativan at a dose of 4-6mg and truly liked it. It was in combo with luvox the only benzo compatible with it even though my current doc gives me valium and xanax with it. But back to the ativan I found it to be very smooth and relaxing and lasted around 4-6 hours. Can't remember why I was changed. But think the pdoc at the time just love xanax so he switched me to that with prozac didn't work . The other did luvox and ativan. Love Phillipa

Klonopin is double the strength of Ativan and has a longer half life of 18-50 hours while Ativan has a half-life of 10-20 hours. They are both powerful anxiolytics but Klonopin seems to cause more depression with long-term treatment.

In terms of social phobia, klonopin is superior. Klonopin is less sedating, longer-acting, and has a more complex pharmacology. Ativan, is very fast acting, short-lived, and more of a "sedative." Ativan is better for acute stress reactions, where sedation and sleep are preferred (ie a good med to take if you have a fear of flying, and are about to get on a plane)
