Insurance question

Posted by peddidle on April 22, 2007, at 14:17:08

I am pretty clueless about health insurance. I don't want my parents to know if I start taking a new med, so if I use my insurance card when I go get a prescription filled, is there any way they would find out?

yes, if you are covered under your parents drug insurance. most drug plans have a web site listing all the prescriptions ordered and will even supply a year end summary for tax time.

Agree if you're covered by your parents there is also probably a co-pay and I know my insurance sends a statement at the end of each month. Love Phillipa

You should have the right to privacy if you are at least the age of majority, at least here in the US.
But do not expect this unless you request it.
Call the insurance company, the number should be on your card, and request your info be kept separate from your parents. Ask them if your prescription info will not be viewable on any statements your parents receive. It is best to have any mail concerning insurance sent to a different address if you live with your parents.

That has nothing to do with it.

Thanks for the info, everyone! It sounds like, despite what my T says, there is a good chance my parents would find out at some point.

Maybe I can just pay for the prescription without using my insurance. Does anyone know roughly how much it is (xanax, klonopin, or ativan)?

Generic is not expensive and Costco has the best prices. For a month definitely under $50 closer to $20 something. Good luck and call around for the best price. Love Phillipa

those meds are generic and cheap. just pay cash and you will be safe.

Yes, call for prices

I did this when I was prescribed a med that wasn't covered by my insurance. I was surprised at the price difference at the different pharmacies, even when they were across the street from each other!

Sometimes the cash price of generic Xanax was lower than my copay - depends on the dosage.
