Switching from Geodon to...

Posted by Sheilac on February 14, 2011, at 8:26:33

I have been on Geodon for several months (maybe around 8 months). Started on 40mg - didn't help mood, upped to 60mg, mood less angry but...

Geodon has given me constant, uncontrollable eye twitches in my left eye. Embarrassing! Also, I'm not sure that Geodon has totally controlled my symptoms. Couldn't up it to 80mg as I had other twitches appear!

Also concerned about long term heart issues (my mother and others in my family have severe atrial fib).

I am thinking of moving over to an easier mood stabilizer without the worry of heart issues and all these crazy twitches.

I was thinking of going back to tegretol or trileptal. Any others I should consider?

Don't want weight gain, twitches, heart problems, etc.

Sheila another poster on here also had the eye twitches with geodon. I feel your concerns with that and other health issues are worthy of changing meds. Hoping the poster sees your thread. Phillipa

why not try Saphris, i havent tried myself, but i heared its better then abilify, geodon, seroquel, zyprex, risperidone, it's actually my hope to get my life back at this point... but its not here until November so thats a long wait

I don't know your symptoms or past meds, but Trileptal and Lamictal are both pretty effective and seem to be well-tolerated.

Seroquel? Switching from Geodon to...

Is switching back to Seroquel an answer? I never had the heart palps on Seroquel. Of course, I only took about 50mg, which pretty much knocked me out and I slept great. Don't know if 50mg helps with mood?

Hey. From your previous posts, it seems like the main thing an antipsychotic would do for you is act as a tranquilizer--keep your agitation and mood swings in check. I don't think you need high doses to get that effect. My guess (I'm not a doctor, so feel free to reject whatever I say) is that Seroquel could do the trick. When I tried Seroquel, my shrink told me it started working as more than just a sedative+antihistamine at around 150-200mgs/day. Have you tried the XR? Maybe if you could ramp up to around that dose in the XR and keep the old style tablets around (for insomnia, maybe) you could see how it works.

Are you still taking the Adderall? I know someone who takes Seroquel+Adderall, and her life has improved greatly--minimal depression, no significant anxiety or agitation, so on and so forth.

Dropped Geodon...

My doc gave me a couple of options. Since the Prozac is making me feel almost too laid back, she said we could just drop the Geodon, or we could try Trileptal. Or, go back to taking Seroquel at night and Prozac during the day.

I tried a couple nights of Trileptal and what a nighmare! I couldn't sleep, tossed and turned and sweat all night. I was miserable. This happened to me a long time ago when I tried both Tegretol and Trileptal. They just make me hot and sweaty.

So, tonight I need sleep. I am going back to Seroquel at night (50mg) and plan on getting some sleep.
