Is there a difference bet.100mg + 200mg of zoloft?

Posted by mogger on June 7, 2011, at 17:28:57

Hi there,

I am beginning to have sexual dysfunction (embarrassing) with my zoloft and I am at 200mg for my ocd. I was thinking about asking my pdoc to drop the dose of it but am worried it won't be nearly as effective at a lower dose. Does anyone know if there is a huge difference between say 100mg and 200mg? I know it sounds like a stupid question as it is double the dose but I have heard from a few people that 100mg can be almost as effective as 200mg. Many thanks,

Joseph

Sorry meant the title to say "is there a difference between 100mg and 200mg of zoloft?"

I dunno. Probably not the answer you were looking for. Anyway, when I took 200mgs/zoloft, all the dosage increase over 50mgs did was make me more apathetic and flattened my emotions more. I've read that higher doses=better for OCD. I've also read that switching to or adding Wellbutrin can help with the sexual dysfunction.

Good luck.

The dose/response curve is shalow for most patients - ie, 200mg doesnt give that much more benifit than 200mg, however, its very individual, some peoples panic disorder or ocd needs 200mg (or even 400mg) per day to give control.

thank you for the responses. I suppose I have to just go for it and go down on it and see what happens. I have the inositol which hopefully will makeup for the decrease in possible effectiveness of the zoloft. The sexual dysfunction is pretty embarrassing so I must do it. Thanks again,

Joseph

Hi there,

I am having the same problem as you on 200mg sertraline / day - my doctor has recommended either:
1. waiting to see if my body adjusts and it goes away
2. decreasing to 150mg / day
I have had some serious psychiatric problems and am currently feeling much improved so I want if possible not to rock the boat by decreasing the dosage.
I wondered what you did, how you coped with any changes and if it improved your sexual function.

Please let me know, I am getting very anxious.

Hello there,

On the one hand it is good to know that zoloft is helping you and on the other I am sorry to hear that the sexual dysfunction is a problem. Your doctor has a good plan to see if it goes away as it well could do. My reduction of zoloft has helped my sex drive however I reduced it not only because of the sexual dysfunction but because of the sweating it was/has caused me. Adding inositol to zoloft for ocd has been great but has made me sweat twice as bad so I decreased the zoloft. I have a friend who is on zoloft and takes Maca and now his sexual function has skyrocketed and is back to normal. Here is a study that was done about Maca and SSRI dysfunction. He swears by it! I am sorry to hear that you are getting anxious about it but hang in there and see what you think of this article. He says only to buy the best Maca as there is a lot of inferior products.

Hey

Thanks for the very swift reply, much appreciated. I was wondering if your friend was male or female, since the study you highlighted contains 20 subjects, most of whom were female. Also I'm a little unsure about taking a herbal remedy without first talking to my psychiatrist.

I actually spoke to him earlier today about things - I have been on sertraline for several months and at 200mg/day for about 10-12 weeks. He suggested I either stay at the same dosage and see whether it goes away in a few weeks, or reduce the dosage to 150mg. He said a reduction in dosage is what they would do first before changing to a different antidepressant anyway. I'm a little unsure which of the options to take; I feel like 10-12 weeks is long enough that it is unlikely to get better with more time i.e. my body is probably pretty well adjusted to the medication by now... but was wondering what your thoughts might be on this?

Best wishes

No problem I am happy to help. He is a male and swears by it. Perhaps you can email your doctor the article which is from a reputable source and he/she would be open to you trying it before going down? However I am sure 150mg will improve your sexual function but you might be able to get the both worlds by using the two with your doctors consent. I think your hunch is correct about the 10-12 weeks being long enough for your body to adjust to the meds but I am not a doctor. Try not to get too anxious though as 150 mg is still a great and highly effective dose.

Im on 150mg zoloft and 150mg wellbutrin. Wellbutrin raises the level of zoloft a little also.
Ive had sexual dysfunction since I started this drug. Lowering the dose to 100 gives me a little relief but not much. And then I start getting depressive symptoms creeping in.
Wellbutrin helps with desire, but not with performance. Ironic. =(
