Anti-Acid goes well with Lithium?

Posted by HappyGirl on December 24, 2011, at 14:20:15

Hi:
Just wonder what Anti-Acid med. goes well with the Lithium?

The reason for this is that most of Anti-Acid meds. decrease an efficacy of the Lithium?

Thanks,

I checked interactions with a wide variety of antacids and lithium, and only one substance, sodium bicarbonate (Alka-Seltzer, for example) is contraindicated. It does reduce the effectiveness of lithium by increasing the excretion rate into urine.

I would think that occasional use of non-bicarbonate antacids would be on no consequence. But if you are going to use one frequently, it would be wise to consult your doctor, to see if you may need to have your lithium levels checked.

Best,
Lar

There were some studies that indicated Zantac reduced Lithium blood levels, but they weren't well verified.

I take Aciphex and have never had a problem with my Lithium levels.
