Trazodone in divided doses or all at bedtime?

Posted by Lamdage22 on July 2, 2016, at 5:57:27

Hey ya'll,

hope everything is okay. I take 75mg of Trazodone at night.

Any advice?

The half-life of trazodone is approximately 12 hours, regardless of delivery system. I see that trazodone blood levels spike and drop-off quickly after a dose of the original IR version whereas the extended-release verson (Oleptro) produces a much smoother AUC (area under the curve). However, both preparations arrive at the same blood level after 12 hours. Because you are using trazodone for something other than a sleep-aid, I would either take the IR version three times a day on an empty stomach or one Oleptro at night. For the most part, I tend to dose in a way that produces the smoothest blood level AUC. There may be situations where you would want a blood-level spike. I just can't think of any right now.

Changing your dosing schedule is, of course, just an experiment. You might find that your current schedule of administration works best. I will be interested to see where you end up.

Good luck.

I don't know if there is any evidence of the IR working worse or better than SR version.

I didn't notice any withdrawal like effects from the IR version. The half life is only for the parent compound, there could be active metabolites as well.

The SR version might not be so much about improved efficacy as it is about making $ with a new patent (?)

mainly trazadone is best used at night, because of it's drowsiness it produces, it does have some anti-depressant properties but it's mainly good at night because it's sleepy sedation it gives......during the day it could be difficult to function with daily tasks due to it's drowsiness it produces
