Nortriptyline or desipramine

Posted by JFL on September 27, 2020, at 8:38:04

After having tried a few SSRIs, SNRIs, ECT, mirtazapine with Wellbutrin, and Nardil, my psychopharmacologist has recommended that I try a tricyclic: either nortriptyline or desipramine.

I suffer from unipolar depression, along with anxiety.

The thought of going on a tricyclic makes me very anxious, due to the potential side effects. Which of these two medicines has a more likely chance of fewer side effects? Which would be more effective?

I am currently on 90 mg mirtazapine, 450 mg Wellbutrin, 200 mg Lamictal, 5 mg Abilify, 1200 mg gabapentin, and 2 mg clonazepam.

If it's any consolation, I had fewer side effects on nortriptyline than any of the newer medications. Nortriptyline might be a bit better for anxiety than desipramine.

Not sure if these are really what youd want for anxiety. When I took them they were pretty energizing.
One thing I really liked about desipramine, it really helped my allergies and opened up my sinuses.

I found nortriptyline *both* energizing and really good for anxiety.

unfortunately it looks like response is pretty individual.
Dr. Stahl recommends adding nortriptyline to an SSRI as one of his 'heroic combos' or something I think? Been awhile since I read that.
