In reply to Sabril for Narcotic Withdrawal, posted by Deb on September 3, 1998, at 10:51:40
I looked it up on the FDA website and saw that it had been applied for approval in the US in Nov 1997. Where it is now, I don't know. Perhaps still in US trials. I checked Medline and found a few articles on it as an anticonvulsant and it looks quite good for that. I also found a few separate articles on using the kind of GABA blocker that Sabril is in rats (and if you can believe it, in cockroaches) who have been trained to drink alcohol and indeed it decreased the rats' cravings for alcohol. I couldn't find anything on its use in humans for alcohol or narcotics. I don't think it would do anything helpful for narcotic or alcohol withdrawal exactly, but it may decrease craving and relapse. Someone else may know more.
