In reply to fish oil/ phospholipid schizophrenia hypothesis, posted by Thomas Rodd on December 4, 1998, at 8:55:12
> My adult son, who's been ill with scizophrenia for four years, started clozaril six months ago and has shown a great improvement. In my web browsing I recently found the University of Sheffield web site (http://unicorn.shef.ac.uk:80/uni/projects/omega3/dietand.htm) that reports on their work exploring the possible beneficial effects of fish oil and the fatty acids, EPA, etc., on schizophrenia symptoms and discussing a phospholipid hypothesis. Also see http://www.fincastle.com:80/corp/products.html.
> I copied the reports and sent them to my son's doctor, asking her whether she thought it was worth suggesting that my son try taking fish oil supplements. I wonder if anyone has any other references or information that I might share with her. I haven't seen much information on the schizophreina.com site, but it is somewhat chaotic.
James here....I avoid fish oil because of DDT and the increasing problems with finding aquatic life with serious problems. Hemp Seed oil (having no THC) is a very high source of the Omegas and EFA's including linditic acid (which is a EFA..though I have spelled it wrong!...that is very hard to get in even a well balanced diet)
i have seen doc's on this link between sciz and EFA and omegas. It can't hurt to add them to anyones diet...they are cardio protective and anti-oxidents...james
